Has Also Been In Talks For 'Oz The Great And Powerful'To be honest, this writer has about zero interest in "Hunger Games" and has found the daily, piecemeal, no-name casting announcements to be irritating as hell, but now that opinion is swinging back around. At least temporarily.

It has been almost a decade since Lynne Ramsay's "Morvern Callar," and while some of that time was spent on an adaptation of "The Lovely Bones" that was scuttled (with Peter Jackson later delivering his take on the material to theaters), we're glad she's finally back. Next month she'll hit Cannes with "We Need To Talk About Kevin" another tough drama that promises to be a doozy.

To be certain, Roman Polanski's last effort, "The Ghost Writer," polarized The Playlist staff. While some found it be a pretty harmless, if not particularly memorable, political potboiler, others completely hated it (though we all agreed Kim Cattrall's accent was egregious). Even on the score, some of us loved Alexandre Desplat's whirring strings, while others found it be a weaker work from the accomplished and prolific composer (the Christmas party eventually turned ugly). But regardless of all that, Polanski's latest has us all pretty excited, bringing together a top notch cast for the film version of an acclaimed play.

Zach Galifianakis, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Robert Loggia, Jeff Goldblum, Will Forte & William Atherton Will All FeatureTo go over the multiple six degrees of comedy connections between Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim would take us all night but here's the short version: these are two funny dudes whose success and cult status of their recently ended "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!" sketch comedy show on Adult Swim brought them to the attention of comedy's biggest stars and made them a team clearly headed onto bigger and better things. Word around their feature debut has been bubbling for the past few weeks, but it looks like things are finally getting locked into place.

On paper, "Cedar Rapids" sounds like a no brainer. The Frank Capra-esque premise is familiar: a small town man is sent off to the big city where he struggles to adjust to the fast pace and shifty morals of metropolitan life. And when you line up a stacked roster of talent that includes John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Sigourney Weaver, Alia Shawkat, Rob Corddry and Stephen Root, the movie should pretty much just write itself. Figuratively speaking, that is. But unfortunately, Miguel Arteta seems to have literally taken what was probably a great treatment and hoped that his actors and actresses could do the rest with unfortunately middling results.

2011 is quickly shaping up to be an exciting year for female-driven/directed pictures, with a wealth of great, intelligent options for people that are frankly sick of the overtly male-dominated market (or Katherine Heigl). Multiplexes will see Kristen Wiig lead an ensemble of funny ladies in "Bridesmaids," art house cinemas get Kelly Reichardt's dustbowl period piece "Meek's Cutoff," festivals continue to be graced by Slamdance-winner "Without," and hopefully the online community will see a glimpse of the Linda Cardellini war movie “Return” (hint hint), which has been compared to "Safe" and "A Woman Under The Influence.” Yowza.

Shooting began earlier this week on Roman Polanski’s “Carnage,” a film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning play "Gods Of Carnage" by Yasmina Reza. Stars Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz have traveled to Paris to the shoot the film about two sets of parents that come together to hash it out after their children get into a playground fight. True to the title, the meeting eventually turns out bad for all as the parents begin to attack and turn on each other. Winslet and Waltz play husband and wife Nancy and Alan, while Foster and Reilly as Penelope and Michael. The film is being produced by Said Ben Said through SBS Productions with ICM repping sales in the U.S.

Coming of age stories are as popular at Sundance as superhero films are at the multiplex, and though “Terri” doesn’t bring anything new to the genre, it does have its charms. Terri (newcomer Jacob Wysocki) is an outsider, a lonely overweight teen who lives in a small town and takes care of his Uncle James (Creed Bratton from “The Office”) who is suffering from some form of dementia. After Uncle James orders him to put mousetraps in the attic, he develops an unexpected fondness for killing mice and it becomes his daily joy. Outside of this private pleasure, Terri has completely given up on himself, resorting to wearing his pajamas to school because they’re comfortable. Anyone in high school willing to put a target like that on their back implies that things probably can’t get any worse. After an outburst in class, following some routine bullying, he’s sent to see the Vice Principal, Mr. Fitzgerald (John C. Reilly) who decides in order to help Terri that they should meet weekly to discuss what’s going on in his life.
