'Drive' Composer Cliff Martinez Reteams With Nicolas Winding Refn To Score 'Only God Forgives'

Nicolas Winding Refn, currently riding high on BAFTA nods for "Drive" and a Best Director award from Cannes, is not changing the creative formula too much for his next outing, "Only God Forgives." He's re-upped with his bro for life, Ryan Gosling, who takes the lead in the movie and this afternoon it's been confirmed that Cliff Martinez will be back to provide the score.

If you had told us at the beginning of the year that the soundtrack to Nicolas Winding Refn's low-budget arthouse noir "Drive" would become a smash hit, we would have said you were crazy. But nothing about that film could be called predictable, and when Refn splased up the neon title card with "Nightcall" playing underneath it, all bets were off. But if you loved the tunes on the soundtrack, Santa is filling your stocknig with a lot more as producer Johnny Jewel -- the man behind Glass Candy and spin off bands Chromatics ("Tick Of The Clock") and Desire ("Under Your Spell") -- has delivered Symmetry: Themes For An Imaginary Film.

Of all the many pleasures of Nicolas Winding Refn's very imminent "Drive," one of the deepest is its ice-cool soundtrack. Combining a fantastic 80s-tinged synth score from Cliff Martinez with a selection of Italodisco cuts from artists like Kavinsky and College, it's worth a download even if you have no intention of seeing the film. And it looks like the soundscape of the film is something that Winding Refn is intending on continuing in the near future; Portland electronica artist Johnny Jewel, best known for his band Glass Candy (whose music was featured in Refn's "Bronson"), but who has two song on the film through side-projects Desire and Chromatics, has revealed that the director's asked him to work on his big blockbuster debut.
