Peeps
So Hollywood has decided to take the last day or so to double down on their efforts to turn every product, food or theme park attraction into a blockbuster tentpole. Out of that abyss comes a trio of projects that paint a pretty depressing portrait of what passes for creativity at the studio level.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
At one time, Marc Webb was the guy who directed some music videos and the charming rom-com "(500) Days Of Summer." And the next thing he knew, he was caught in the web of "The Amazing Spider-Man," directing two films of the franchise so far, and recently confirmed for the third. But it looks like he's getting an exit strategy together.

With "The Hangover" boys having seemingly exploited every debauchery laden avenue Las Vegas has to offer and then some, another party-happy movie set in the city might seem like a tired notion. Particularly when it's combined with a premise as wheezy and obvious as this, getting four older men together for one last hurrah in the city where your sins remain secret. But somehow, "Last Vegas" is better than it has any right to be. Yes, it's uneven, more jokes miss than hit, and it winds up taking easy dramatic shortcuts from the more interesting avenues that the script presents, but it's thanks to the lead quartet that the comedy is as engaging at it is.

The city of London recently learned that Olympics fever is extremely infectious. Evidently said fever has managed to spread outside the U.K. and has made its way to Los Angeles, where it has found director John Turteltaub (“National Treasure”). He’s signed on to direct “Beached,” the story of a chubby four-year-old boy who falls overboard during a family outing. But don’t worry, the chubby kid doesn’t die – instead he’s found and raised by whales. Yes, you read that right, he’s raised by whales. And what does any young boy who’s raised by whales go on to do? Well, become an Olympic swimming champion of course.

Please Let One Of Them Be Nicolas CageWhile the overseas haul of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" helped push the movie into profitability with a $215 million worldwide take, it was pretty much a dud domestically and seems to have temporarily derailed Jon Turteltaub, who we haven't heard much of since. This spring, he was attached to the pretty terrible sounding legal world rom-com "Unreasonable Doubt," but another laffer has crossed his desk and he's taking a good look.

Oof, talk about a car crash of mediocrity. What happens when you pair the director of "National Treasure," "While You Were Sleeping" and "Instinct" with the writer of "Serendipity" and "A Good Year"? You're about to find out.
