The Surprises & Notable Absences Of The 2013 Cannes Line-Up

So the 2013 Cannes lineup has finally been unveiled and as usual, there were a fair few surprise inclusions, a fair few snubby exclusions/category decisions, and some mildly oh!-inducing title changes. The majority of our firm predictions made it in (the Coens, Soderbergh, Farhadi, Sorrentino, Gray, Refn, Denis, Coppola among others) but sometimes into surprising sections, while a couple of films we had down as possibilities or longer shots paid off. So now that we know the lineup from G ('Gatsby' -- opening film) to Z ("Zulu" -- closing film) -- and it's a fairly U.S.-friendly list for Jury President Steven Spielberg to preside over -- lets dive right in and talk about the more eyebrow-raising moments from this morning's announcement.

When it was first announced this summer that "Sexy Beast" and "Birth" director Jonathan Glazer was finally getting to work on his long-awaited next film this fall, we had our doubts. "Under The Skin" had been brewing for a while -- it was once lined up for 2010 shoot, and Gemma Arterton was mooted for the lead -- so while we were excited, we tempered our enthusiasm a bit because particularly with indie financing the way it is, a lot of things could happen between then and now to put the project on hold yet again. But lo and behold, not only has the October start stuck, the film is now shooting and the first glimpse of Scarlett Johansson in the starring role has made its way online.

So after a five year absence, "Little Miss Sunshine" directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are returning with "He Loves Me Not," a whimsical-sounding project -- described as a mix of “Adaptation” and “Weird Science" -- written by actress Zoe Kazan that will star herself, her boyfriend Paul Dano and possibly Jeff Bridges if all goes well. Production Tentatively Slated For Spring 2011If there is one director we've been dying to get back behind the camera, it's Jonathan Glazer. He made a helluva debut with "Sexy Beast" but fell off the map when his sorely underappreciated "Birth" failed to find an audience and got mired in an undeserved minor controversy thanks to the film's "bathtub scene." However, it's not for a lack of trying. Last year, it was reported that his adaptation of Michael Faber's "Under The Skin" was being prepped to go in front of cameras this year, but obviously, that never happened. But it now looks like the wheels are back in motion.
