Under The Skin
To say that we've been looking forward to Jonathan Glazer's "Under The Skin" would be an understatement. The filmmaker made his name with music videos, before turning to the feature film world, dropping his sizzling debut "Sexy Beast" in 2000, followed four years later by "Birth," which, in this writer's opinion, is one of the best films of the 2000s. The wait has been a bit longer for Glazer's sci-fi effort "Under The Skin," which has taken its time from filming through post-production, but it looks like patience has paid off.

Under The Skin
If you’re a random male pedestrian and a gal who looks like Scarlett Johansson ever pulls up and offers to take you to her place for a quickie, the logical thing to do would be run like hell, since this could only be either a sting or a sign of the apocalypse, no matter how good looking a fellow you are. But lust trumps logic as Johansson lures a bevy of bros to their doom in “Under the Skin,” which screened Friday night at the Telluride Film Festival.

With festival season fast approaching, undoubtedly one of our most anticipated films is "Under The Skin." The long-in-the-works project, an adaptation of a novel by Michel Faber ("The Crimson Petal and White"), marks the return to feature filmmaking by commercials/promo wizard Jonathan Glazer, who made a storming debut with the excellent "Sexy Beast," and followed it up with the even better, much undervalued "Birth."

So the 2013 Cannes lineup has finally been unveiled and as usual, there were a fair few surprise inclusions, a fair few snubby exclusions/category decisions, and some mildly oh!-inducing title changes. The majority of our firm predictions made it in (the Coens, Soderbergh, Farhadi, Sorrentino, Gray, Refn, Denis, Coppola among others) but sometimes into surprising sections, while a couple of films we had down as possibilities or longer shots paid off. So now that we know the lineup from G ('Gatsby' -- opening film) to Z ("Zulu" -- closing film) -- and it's a fairly U.S.-friendly list for Jury President Steven Spielberg to preside over -- lets dive right in and talk about the more eyebrow-raising moments from this morning's announcement.

With the 2012 release date schedule pretty much nailed in, give or take a few films, our eyes start to wander to the horizon. Some of this was discussed in one of our recent features where we asked; are any of these dozen or so films going to arrive in 2012?

While making the rounds for the wonderful, shimmery Cameron Crowe joint "We Bought a Zoo," the wonderful, shimmery Scarlett Johansson offered New York Magazine's Vulture blog some juicy tidbits about two of her most speculated-about upcoming projects: Jonathan Glazer's "Under the Skin" and her own adaptation of Truman Capote's posthumously published novel, "Summer Crossing," that will mark her feature directorial debut.

When it was first announced this summer that "Sexy Beast" and "Birth" director Jonathan Glazer was finally getting to work on his long-awaited next film this fall, we had our doubts. "Under The Skin" had been brewing for a while -- it was once lined up for 2010 shoot, and Gemma Arterton was mooted for the lead -- so while we were excited, we tempered our enthusiasm a bit because particularly with indie financing the way it is, a lot of things could happen between then and now to put the project on hold yet again. But lo and behold, not only has the October start stuck, the film is now shooting and the first glimpse of Scarlett Johansson in the starring role has made its way online.

It's been seven whole years since we've had a new feature from British director Jonathan Glazer, but after several hiccups, it looks like his adaptation of Michael Faber's darkly comic sci-fi novel "Under The Skin" is finally gathering some momentum with production set to begin this October.

So after a five year absence, "Little Miss Sunshine" directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are returning with "He Loves Me Not," a whimsical-sounding project -- described as a mix of “Adaptation” and “Weird Science" -- written by actress Zoe Kazan that will star herself, her boyfriend Paul Dano and possibly Jeff Bridges if all goes well. This morning, Fox Searchlight announced it had picked up the picture and it would shoot later this summer. Finally!

Production Tentatively Slated For Spring 2011If there is one director we've been dying to get back behind the camera, it's Jonathan Glazer. He made a helluva debut with "Sexy Beast" but fell off the map when his sorely underappreciated "Birth" failed to find an audience and got mired in an undeserved minor controversy thanks to the film's "bathtub scene." However, it's not for a lack of trying. Last year, it was reported that his adaptation of Michael Faber's "Under The Skin" was being prepped to go in front of cameras this year, but obviously, that never happened. But it now looks like the wheels are back in motion.
