Review: 'Dark Shadows' Is Another Lazy, Incoherent Disappointment From Tim Burton

“Dark Shadows” is not the worst movie that Tim Burton has ever made, but that’s only because there’s nothing worse than “Alice in Wonderland.” A desperate jumble of ideas in search of deeper substance, much less focus, Burton’s latest collaboration with actor Johnny Depp is the latest, and perhaps greatest, proof that yet exists for a director, Burton’s a hell of a production designer. Given the film’s incredible lack of cohesion – or follow-through – the film feels like the resigned end result of a studio’s best efforts to whittle an unwieldly mess into something manageable, but far too many of its shortcomings remain exposed for it to play as anything other than a showcase for the star and filmmaker’s laziness, hubris, or both.

When CBS announced their plans for a new show based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, Steven Moffat -- the creator/writer of the BBC's excellent "Sherlock" -- tweeted: "Dear CBS. A modern day Sherlock Holmes? Where, oh where, did you get THAT idea? We'll be watching!" The CBS version, which will go by the absolutely terrible title "Elementary," will relocate Holmes to modern-day New York City for the pilot, which will be directed by Michael Cuesta ("Homeland").

In this day and age, where you can't throw a rock in a movie theater without hitting a bloodsucker-themed movie, it takes a lot to get us to register even a flicker of interest in a vampire film. But it helps a lot if you have Neil Jordan at the helm, a man who way back to "The Company Of Wolves" has proven to be a master of the macabre, and a director capable of bringing plenty of thematic richness to genre fare.

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have been talking about teaming up for an adaptation of 1960s vampire soap "Dark Shadows" for years now, but for a while, it was unclear if the always-busy megastar would find room in his schedule for the film. But if "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Alice in Wonderland" taught us anything in the last few years, it's that if the pair are attached to a VFX-heavy, production design-reliant project that plays right into their comfort zones, it'll happen sooner or later. And indeed, "Dark Shadows" begins production in the U.K. this week.
