Most of the big fall pictures we've looked at the potential pros and cons of so far have been more serious in nature -- unsurprising, considering that films at this time of year tend to be targeting the Oscars. Sure, there's the light-hearted animation "Wreck-It Ralph," but we've also had "Lincoln," "Skyfall," "Flight," "Django Unchained," and "Les Miserables," most of which are likely to be relatively light on laughs (though will probably turn out to be funnier than some of the upcoming so-called comedies like "Playing For Keeps" and "Parental Guidance").

Holy shit, the '90s right? And while the decade that gave us grunge, gangsta rap, wallet chains, Quentin Tarantino knockoffs, Guy Ritchie knockoffs, Pogs and all kinds of other stuff, is experiencing a bit of a nostalgia wave, thanks to every indie band who released an album between 1990 and 1999 reuniting, one group that won't be getting back together is the "Freaks & Geeks" crew. Though the resurrection of "Arrested Development" has given hope to every canceled show out there, creators Judd Apatow and Paul Feig have revealed they aren't likely to go down that path.

It's spinoff/sidequel week over at Universal. With "The Bourne Legacy" hitting theaters on Friday, the studio will be using the opportunity to get audiences ready for another film that will be taking some old characters, adding some new ones, and putting them in a fresh movie to create something new.

Crowd," which brought him to the attention of Hollywood. And while his early film roles went off a little half-cocked -- "Dinner For Schmucks," "Gulliver's Travels," "The Boat That Rocked" -- he's had an enormous amount of success in the last twelve months or so, led by being the romantic lead in monster comedy hit "Bridesmaids."

When Judd Apatow's "This Is 40" was first announced, it was described as not a sequel to "Knocked Up" by Universal even though the film is clearly a look at the lives of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) a few years after the events of that film. Now the new poster (like the recent trailer) plays with that tag describing the film as the "sort-of sequel to 'Knocked Up'. " Nice wink at that original claim, Uni.

The film opened the Tribeca Film Festival a couple of days ago and hits theaters next week, and as we noted in our review, the film is "sweet and touching" and hits all the right comic notes you can expect.

Yesterday at the Tribeca Film Festival, a special event was held celebrating the centennial anniversary of Universal Pictures. This “100 Years Panel,” hosted by Deadline staffer Mike Fleming, featured an introduction by Ron Meyer, Universal’s long-standing CEO, and panelists Judd Apatow and Robert De Niro (both frequent Universal employees and creative partners). And while this might have seemed like a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Universal’s first 100 years (and the movies De Niro and Apatow have memorably contributed), it turned out to be a slog – an excruciatingly unentertaining hour that oscillated between terse answers by De Niro and wild outbursts from Apatow.

While the show only lasted a season (although ratings were enough that, were it on today, it would be a big hit), so much of what's proved successful in the comedy world in the last decade can be traced back to " Freaks & Geeks." Executive produced by Judd Apatow, who's been behind many of the most successful comedies in recent years, from "Anchorman" to the upcoming "The Five-Year Engagement," and created by Paul Feig, who reunited with Apatow for last year's smash hit "Bridesmaids," it followed a group of nerds and burnouts in a Michigan high school.
