Eight years after audiences first visited the monochrome, rain slicked, bullet filled streets of "Sin City," are they ready to go there again? Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller certainly hope so, with talk of a TV series and "Sin City 3" already percolating. But to get there, the awkwardly titled "Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame To Kill For" will need to make some major waves, and the first trailer is here to entice with more pulpy adventures.

“When I saw his movie,” said director Jim Mickle at Cannes earlier this year, in his opening thank you to Jorge Michel Grau, the director of “Somos Lo Que Hay,” “I was jealous of everything: the idea, the plot, the style, and jealous that it was playing at Cannes in Director’s Week.” And so Mickle went about securing the rights to remake the hit Mexican film, co-opting the idea, the plot and elements of the style for his English-language “We Are What We Are," co-written with frequent collaborator Nick Damici, which also landed in the Cannes Directors' Fortnight earlier this year.

2010’s “The Last Exorcism” was a mildly successful found-footage horror movie about a huckster exorcist (played memorably by hey-it’s-that-guy character actor Patrick Fabian) who accidentally stumbles upon an actual possession while being followed around by an amateur documentary film crew. It was also, at least initially, metaphorically rich, with the demonic activity standing in for domestic abuse and the violence often bred by small-minded, backwoods religious fervor. Of course, all that nuance was jettisoned in the last ten minutes, when the possessed young girl (Ashley Bell) gave birth to what appeared to be a small gremlin or possibly the young version of Hellboy. In the wholly unnecessary “The Last Exorcism Part II,” the young girl has survived the demon-birth (or whatever) and is trying to reacclimate to society. Unfortunately, the sequel follows the original too closely, so that any attempt at substantial dimension is undone in favor of hoary horror movie tropes.

Robert Rodriguez's CGI-heavy and visually stylistic "Sin City" movies require heavy technical demands, but also allow him a flexibility in filmmaking. Essentially, since everything is on green screens, and thanks to advances in technology, shooting can take place whenever cast members are available, and then everything can be stitched together afterward. Actors in the same scene don't necessarily don't have to be on the same set on the same day, so it's no surprise that as cameras keep rolling on "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For," new cast members are being added.

While there are still not enough good roles for women out there, particularly in mainstream Hollywood, that hasn't stopped a batch of young female stars from exploding from out of nowhere in recent years. Head-turning performances have helped launch faces like Carey Mulligan, Mia Wasikowska, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Felicity Jones and many others into the stratosphere, and the success last weekend of "The Hunger Games" has hopefully put to rest the fallacy that huge audiences won't turn up to big movies carried by a woman.

Seeming even younger than her 18 years, Julia Garner, the lead in Rebecca Thomas' debut feature "Electrick Children" (reviewed here) delivers one of those performances that marks a new star in the ascendant. Juggling upcoming roles and sweetly new to the world of press junkets and promotion, we spoke briefly with Garner at the Berlin Film Festival where the film played to a very warm reception on the opening night of the Generation Section.
