Focus Features is starting to build their own exclusive tentpole weekend each year. Marvel usually claims the opening May slot of every summer, and different studios trade off the lucrative July 4th period. But Focus has rubber-stamped the under-attended Labor Day weekend as theirs, with middlebrow adult pictures that raise some interesting socio-political issues before delving into melodramatic gibberish by the third act. These films are surprise financial successes, and portray a certain artfulness at times, with “The Constant Gardener” and “The Debt” modest potboilers with similar weaknesses ("The American" is somewhat more of a success in that regard, but cut from a similar cloth). Joining that group is the latest in that tradition, “Closed Circuit,” which delivers the same deceptively empty pleasures as the latter two, a formula that’s beginning to show its cracks.

Closed Circuit
While the summer movie season has mostly left us disappointed at the multiplex, with studios serving movies with lots of flash and little else, there has been a silver lining for those avoiding the sequels, superhero movies and CGI tentpoles. There's been a healthy amount of smarter fare for discerning moviegoers, and coming at the end of the month is another picture with the potential to shake the blockbuster blues. It's "Closed Circuit," the latest from "Boy A" director John Crowley, boasting a script from "Eastern Promises" scribe Steven Knight and two compelling leads in Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall. And we've got a special preview for you today.

Real time, one-setting films are a tricky feat to pull off, stumping even the most accomplished directors (have you seen “Carnage”?), but director Todd Berger does it with panache in his sophomore feature, a clever take on the apocalypse film, “It’s A Disaster.” Assembling a cast of eight actors in one house for a film that’s part relationship dramedy and part end-of-the-world movie, Berger keeps the setting fresh and the pace moving in a story that takes a humorous look at the problems, both epic and trivial, that threaten to ruin lives.

Julia Stiles has had a long and varied career since her breakout role opposite Heath Ledger in "10 Things I Hate About You," the '90s high school adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew." Since then she's been a Jason Bourne accomplice, danced with death on TV's "Dexter," delivered David Mamet dialogue on stage, and currently has a spate of new high profile film roles coming up. We caught up with the New Yorker on the phone on the eve of the world premiere of her latest flick, "It's a Disaster."

Though human civilization keeps sailing past its supposed end-dates, the apocalypse is still a source of fascination for many of us, and for filmmakers in particular. While this year will see the serious and big-budget take on the end with the Brad Pitt-starring zombie tentpole “World War Z,” Todd Berger has delivered a smaller and more irreverent take on our doom with the black comedy “It’s A Disaster.” A trailer has now arrived online, so stock up on supplies and check it out below.

Life hasn't been too kind lately for Pat Solitano. He's just been released from a court ordered stint in a mental hospital after severly beating the man he caught cheating with his wife. Diagnosed as bipolar with mood swings, Pat has a difficult journey ahead of him but he's optimistic. With a rallying cry of "Excelsior," he believes that you can take "all negativity and make it a silver lining." His outlook is positive and he hopes to rebuild himself to win his wife back who has a restraining order out on him. And so begins David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook," an enormously entertaining, crowd-pleasing winner from the director whose comedic edge has never been sharper.

Chris Tucker Looking Likely As He Enters Final NegotiationsJulia Stiles' career has been a bit of an odd one. She's been working consistently ever since the late '90s/early aughts but never quite became a household name. In recent years, she's probably best known for her role in the 'Bourne' trilogy, "Mona Lisa Smile" and her turn on the last season of "Dexter." And while the actress can never be quite pegged down, we really didn't expect this bit of news.

Previously Attached Neil LaBute Penned ScriptSince it was first announced back in January, "Seconds of Pleasure" has seen a world of changes and additions as it gears up to go in front of cameras. Firstly, the previously attached Neil LaBute is now out of the director's chair with Mike Figgis ("Leaving Las Vegas") replacing him, though it will still utilize his script which looks to be based on his book of short stories with the same name.
