It's almost that time again.... Arriving like clockwork, it seems every year or so we get another Nicholas Sparks movie adaptation (in 2010 we were lucky enough to get two movies based on his books!). And for his fanbase that likes to hear a variation on the same mediocre, manipulative story over and and over and over and over again, "Safe Haven" will be a warm, vanilla pillow of familiarity and fake emotion.

From the filmmaker behind the star-crossed lovers fromage of "Dear John" (director Lasse Hallström) and the author of "The Notebook" (Nicholas Sparks, who also wrote "Dear John") comes the latest in Harlequin-esque romance for the screen, "Safe Haven." Starring Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough with a supporting cast that includes Cobie Smulders and David Lyons, "Safe Haven" is being touted as a romantic thriller, or according to distributors Relativity Media, an "affirming and suspenseful story about a young woman’s struggle to love again." Color yourself intrigued.

Julianne Hough To Star In Pre-'Juno' Diablo Cody Penned 'Time And A Half'

“Juno” may have been the film that announced Diablo Cody as a screenwriter to be reckoned with, but by then she’d already penned a bunch of scripts that she believed would probably never see the light of day. One of those scripts, “Time and a Half,” a Gen X inspired satire of modern day hipsters which Cody described as “a generational, working stiffs kind of comedy” now looks dead certain to make it to the big screen. Cody sold the script some time ago and hasn't touched it since, telling us last year "they hired somebody to rewrite it at some point and, I didn't really want to work on it anymore" but it’s unlikely that will stop the film, which has just secured its lead actress, from being marketed as a Diablo Cody flick.

"Rock of Ages" will make you want to raise your arms...and then immediately plunge your fingers into your eyeballs for salvation (you can go back for seconds to rescue your ears). "Hairspray" helmer Adam Shankman directs this movie that will finally kill the '80s nostalgia that continues to plague us if we're lucky and will further root karaoke performances and bar jukeboxes in that hairspray-choked decade if we're not. We've had a sub-par version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" stuck in our head since we saw it, and we wouldn't wish this fate on anyone, except perhaps the development heads at Warner Bros. As much as everyone keeps trying to make Julianne Hough a star, Steve Perry she is not (though admittedly she is cuter).

If you still have Def Leppard’s Pyromania album on heavy rotation and prefer Jefferson Starship to Jefferson Airplane, then there’s a pretty good chance you’re excited for the upcoming musical adaptation, “Rock Of Ages.” An ode to the days of hair metal and tight leather pants, “Hairspray” helmer Adam Shankman has cooked up a tale of a small town girl (livin’ in a lonely world) and a city boy who fall for one another on the Sunset Strip, all while in pursuit of their Hollywood dreams. Some of us here at The Playlist have secretly been anticipating the film’s June release, and with a cast consisting of Russell Brand, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Malin Akerman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary J. Blige, Bryan Cranston, Will Forte, and of course Tom Cruise doing his best Tim Cappelo interpretation, who can blame us?

Since her breakout role in 2005’s “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” Michelle Monaghan has been steadily turning in solid supporting performances in everything from big-budget thrillers (“Mission Impossible III”) to more character-based dramas (“North Country”), but Hollywood still hasn’t seen her as a leading lady. That’s all set to change though, as Monaghan has signed on to appear in her biggest role yet alongside Susan Sarandon.
