Even without being massively fond of many of the films produced from his screenplays (not least his pretty bad directorial debut "London Boulevard"), we're fond of William Monahan and his salty dialogue, best embodied in his Oscar-winning script for "The Departed," and we're always hopeful that he'll come up with the goods. So despite our feelings about "London Boulevard," we're hopeful for his follow-up "Mojave," not least because of the cast he's assembling.

This writer was not a fan of The Wachowskis new age, multi-threaded, sci-fi tale "Cloud Atlas." However, one person who did impress among the A-list roster of stars, was South Korean actress Bae Doona. Playing Sonmi-451 most prominently (and of course, a couple of other characters just like the rest of the cast) she was (at least in my eyes) one of the few things that worked in the movie, with the futuristic portion of the film perhaps more affecting than anything else. But no matter what, The Wachowskis certainly liked working with her and are going to again.

It seems this year's Hollywood sci-fi blockbusters have found screenwriters just plain tossing out the book of baby names. From Cypher and Kitai Raige in "After Earth" to Raleigh Becket and Stacker Pentecost in "Pacific Rim," it seems a good, sci spectacle requires character names that are so unique, you'll still struggle to remember them. But maybe it's just the genre as a whole as "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is nothing but adventurous names (Plutarch Heavensbee!) while "Ender's Game" will get us closer to people like Mazer Rackham and Dink Meeker.

After flopping pretty hard last fall with the ambitious, new age-y, sci-fi, one-actor-multiple-roles experiment "Cloud Atlas," Warner Bros. are feeling a lot more confident about The Wachowskis next genre project. In fact, they're banking summer 2014 on it.

While Michael Giacchino is best known for working with frequent collaborator J.J. Abrams, and for his efforts on Pixar projects which resulted in his Oscar win for "Up," it looks like the composer to set to add another pair of directors to his roster of regulars.

As we all know, if Sean Bean is in a movie, the odds that his character will end up dying are a lot higher than most. But we like the guy, so we hope his appearance in this potential franchise starter won't be his last.

To whoever is repping Eddie Redmayne as he makes his way into Hollywood: nice work. The actor has been taking a variety of roles, from the gritty indie "Hick," to the biopic "My Week With Marilyn" to this month's Oscar contending "Les Miserables," all allowing him to flex a few different muscles. And now that he's paid his dues and proved himself, he's getting into the tentpole game.

In advance of what may be the most ambitious and risky film of their career, the notoriously press-shy Wachowski Starship are on a press blitzkrieg right now, with a profile in The New Yorker and a fairly lengthy interview over at Hitfix. During their appearance at Fantastic Fest, the filmmaking pair teased their forthcoming return to the sci-fi action realm with “Jupiter Ascending.”
