The Wachowskis
With six weeks to go before the film was set to open, with TV spots and trailers already out in the world, Warner Bros. made the bold move earlier this week to yank their summer sci-fi blockbuster "Jupiter Ascending" from their slate, and reschedule it for the far less glamorous slot of February 6, 2015. It was definitely a surprise, and it's not often that any studio punts their big seasonal tentpole so soon before it's set to hit theaters. And while the reasons for this move have yet to be made official (though many have posited reshoots could be in the works, given the timeframe) it has made us wonder around the Playlist watercooler if the Wachowskis' luck has finally run out.

Jupiter Ascending
In July 2010, Warner Bros. dropped "Inception." The following year, the blockbuster choice was "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows: Part 2," and in 2012, it was "The Dark Knight Rises." Last year, the July anchor fell to "Man Of Steel." And so in 2014, it seemed the studio was feeling pretty confident when they slated the Wachowskis' "Jupiter Ascending" to that primo July slot, but it looks like they've had a change of heart.

Jupiter Ascending
Even with “Cloud Atlas” and its nearly three hour runtime, it seems the Wachowskis still had some sci-fi theatrics and leftover prosthetics ready to go for another round. Mainstream appeal be damned, they’ve boldly prepared “Jupiter Ascending," a futuristic fairy tale of sorts starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, and after two trailers that both boggled and intrigued, we’ve got the first actual clip from the film.

Summer is here and the time is right for dancing in the streets...or going to see big, sometimes senseless blockbusters. In case you missed our summer preview—Our 40 Most Anticipated Films—the list is right here. We’ve mixed indie and tentpoles together because, well, we have omnivorous tastes. But let’s face it, the summer blockbuster does tend to take over and overwhelm the movie narrative during the months of May to August.

Jupiter Ascending
The Wachowskis are back and once again, the fate of the universe is at stake, there's lot of prosthetics and ambitious costumes, and a big sci-fi spectacle being readied to hit the big screen. But here's the thing, post-"The Matrix" the sibling pair haven't exactly been box office titans. "Speed Racer" and "Cloud Atlas" were both high stakes stumbles, and one wonders how much of a shot they'll be given if "Jupiter Ascending" also manages to disappoint.

Terry Gilliam, Zero Theorem
Terry Gilliam is fast becoming one of our favorite interviewees, so in general we take every opportunity we can to talk to him. Just after its Venice premiere, we had a long chat about his new film and at-least-partial return to form, “The Zero Theorem,” and then early last month we talked again in Marrakech. Which meant that during our time with him at the Göteborg International Film Festival this week, we found ourselves in the unusually luxurious position of having time to talk about other things, cabbages and kings.

100 Most Anticipated Films Of 2014 (part 2)
Last week we brought you numbers 100-51 of our 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2014. And while we still have several other look-ahead-to-2014 pieces in the works for the coming days, like a Sundance preview, 2014 Films We've Already Seen, and the ever-controversial Will These Films Suck? rundown of potential lowlights, today we get on to the section that really matters--the top 50 2014 films we're looking forward to most. It's a mouthwatering selection that convinces us once again that we collectively have the greatest job in the world, and has us antsy for the January doldrums to get gone, so let's dive straight in, shall we?

Jupiter Ascending
No matter where you stand on last year's "Cloud Atlas," it's undeniable that it had the stamp of Lana and Andy Wachowski. An amalgam of fantasy, sci-fi and Big Ideas, those have largely been the hallmarks of the directors and they are continuing in that tradition with "Jupiter Ascending," which is dropping the curtain on its veil of secrecy with the first trailer today.

Garrett Hedlund Replaces Jason Clarke In William Monahan's 'Mojave'; Terry Gilliam Has Small Role In The New Wachowski Movie

Even without being massively fond of many of the films produced from his screenplays (not least his pretty bad directorial debut "London Boulevard"), we're fond of William Monahan and his salty dialogue, best embodied in his Oscar-winning script for "The Departed," and we're always hopeful that he'll come up with the goods. So despite our feelings about "London Boulevard," we're hopeful for his follow-up "Mojave," not least because of the cast he's assembling.

'Cloud Atlas' Star Bae Doona Reteams With The Wachowskis For 'Jupiter Ascending'

This writer was not a fan of The Wachowskis new age, multi-threaded, sci-fi tale "Cloud Atlas." However, one person who did impress among the A-list roster of stars, was South Korean actress Bae Doona. Playing Sonmi-451 most prominently (and of course, a couple of other characters just like the rest of the cast) she was (at least in my eyes) one of the few things that worked in the movie, with the futuristic portion of the film perhaps more affecting than anything else. But no matter what, The Wachowskis certainly liked working with her and are going to again.
