Musicians Turned Composers
Increasingly over the last two decades, musicians and bands have looked upon the film score and seen a rare opportunity to challenge themselves in a new medium, and also to gain a break from non-stop touring. The results have been an eclectic, unconventional bounty. Last month, Mica Levi of Micachu and the Shapes delivered an iconic three-note theme to Jonathan Glazer’s “Under The Skin” that rattled the senses, while Devonte Hynes (Lightspeed Champion, Blood Orange) struck a dreamy pop tone of high-school nostalgia with his score to Gia Coppola’s directorial debut, “Palo Alto.”

Karen O Ezra Koenig
If the Oscars ditched the usual razzle dazzle opening number this number, they still brought the music with Best Song nominees getting their chance to shine with live performances. But it wasn't always the songs that got the most attention.

Her, Joaquin Phoenix
While the box office results for "Her" have been disappointing (only $22 million to date), Warner Bros. still believes in the movie, and so too does the industry. Spike Jonze is already seen as a frontrunner for Best Original Screenplay, and while Best Song is largely seen as going to "Frozen," a push is being made for Karen O's sweet and minimal "The Moon Song."

Her, Joaquin Phoenix
While an official soundtrack release for "Her" doesn't seem like it's going to happen anytime soon—Spike Jonze recently said that the Oscar-nominated score by Arcade Fire might not see a retail shelf—the Oscar-nominated song is going to be available to own. Karen O's lovely, low key "The Moon Song" is getting an EP release, with a pretty sweet little extra.

Spike Jonze, Her, Joaquin Phoenix
It would seem that at the moment, Joaquin Phoenix is drawn to stories of oddball relationships. Last year, he found himself entwined with Philip Seymour Hoffman in a father/son, mentor/master union as part of Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master." And a year later he's back, this time romancing the voice of an operating system (really) in Spike Jonze's "Her." And yet, within that premise is film that we called "disarmingly funny, insightful and empathetic," and that we, well, fell in love with. It features a unique vision, tender soul and wouldn't you know it, a great soundtrack too.

Oscars, Score, 2013
This week sees the arrival of Disney's "Frozen," the studio's most acclaimed film in years. It's also a serious throwback to the studio's animated musicals of the late 1980s and 1990s, a full-on songfest with multiple numbers of Broadway quality, and that's useful for our purposes, because this week we're going to focus on the musical categories of the Academy Awards.

When the trailer for Spike Jonze's "Her" dropped a couple weeks back, it was a bombshell. It not only looked pretty damn great, but it also brought with it all sorts of little bits of music news, including the reveal that Arcade Fire would be providing the score and Karen O—the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman who tuned up "Where The Wild Things Are"—had a new song for the movie too. And well, now you can hear the whole damn thing.

While she has definitely earned her stripes as the frontwoman for the acclaimed rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O has also been making some impressive steps in the movie soundtrack world. She memorably contributed a brace of music to Spike Jonze's excellent "Where The Wild Things Are," and last year howled on the cover version of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" for David Fincher's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." But now she's moving back toward something for kids, contributing "Strange Love," a brand new song, to Tim Burton's ghoulish "Frankenweenie." And she's not the only interesting choice on the soundtrack.
