Night Moves, Jesse Eisenberg
After the acclaimed trio of “Old Joy,” “Wendy & Lucy” and “Meek’s Cutoff,” Kelly Reichardt was already proving hard to pin down. The three films that made her name (plus her lesser-known earlier works “ Ode” and “River Of Grass”) are immediately recognizable as the work of the director, but very different from each other thematically, if perhaps not formally. Whatever her next move was going to be, it was going to be interesting, but few would have predicted that it would be “Night Moves” – a crackling little suspense thriller/morality play indebted to Dostoyevsky and Hitchcock. But while it’s a left turn, it’s at least as good as the films that came before it, and still with the same recognizable DNA intact.

For her last effort, the uncompromising western "Meek's Cutoff," the growing cachet of indie filmmaker Kelly Reichardt allowed the director to cast some bigger names than she had worked with in the past, nabbing Bruce Greenwood, Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano to pad out the ensemble. And the experience seems to have been a positive one for Paul Dano, as reps for the actor have confirmed with The Playlist that he is reteaming with Reichardt for the director's next effort, the eco-terrorist film "Night Moves."

Draws Parallels Between His Character And The Documentary 'If A Tree Falls'It's no secret that Kelly Reichardt is one of our favorite filmmakers, a unique voice in cinema whose films to date, such as "Old Joy," "Wendy & Lucy" and "Meek's Cutoff," have arrived in deceptively low key packages, and upon viewing, open up a rich interior world. Word has been quiet since the director dropped her 'Cutoff' but it appears that after delivering that hard scrabble western, she is looking to make a distinct swing into a new direction.

"Meek's Cutoff" takes place in the open fields of the midwest, the year 1845, the land untouched, civilization slowly being built, but where the film feels contemporary, with its period-specific detail, all thick bonnets and dirt-stained wagons, is in its intimacy. Director Kelly Reichardt has made a film where a deadly showdown between "Cowboy" and "Indian" has the same weight as a close-up shot of the strained knuckles of a traveler who has tied down too many ropes nightly.

And 7 Other Things We Learned From Michelle Williams, Zoe Kazan & The Director Who Kept Her Actors In The Dark Back in September of 2009, we heard the quiet rumblings of a new Kelly Reichardt film, thanks to an interview with confidante/sometimes-producer Larry Fessenden with the A.V. Club. The film sounded like a micro-budgeted, anti-Western and we set it high on our anticipated list, waiting patiently for more inklings of news.

A simple, effective, if slightly misleading poster has arrived for Kelly Reichardt's "Meek's Cutoff" but we'll forgive the misdirection just because the one sheet is quite nice.
