Depending on where you stand, how Marvel ultimately treated Mandarin in "Iron Man 3" was either a very clever and unexpected twist, or a complete betrayal of a classic comic villain. But either way, it would be hard to deny that it was great fun watching Ben Kingsley stagger and swagger his way through the role. And it seems like the execs at Marvel like him too, as it may not be the last of we've seen of Trevor Slattery.

The Avengers Tom Hiddleston
Sure, Warner Bros. is finally making the tentative steps towards the inevitable “Justice League” movie along with the much-discussed “Superman vs. Batman” movie, but the studio is still way behind what Marvel has done with their cinematic universe. Since the surprise success of “Iron Man” in 2008, under Kevin Feige, the company has rigidly mapped and guided the increasingly complex universe from box office success to box office success. In an interview with Wired, Feige sheds some light on what the future holds for the comics giant.

Well, that was kind of anti-climactic. With Warner announcing an untitled Superman & Batman film for summer 2015 earlier today, fans at Comic-Con were hoping that Marvel Studios would try and top the rival studio with various possible announcements. After all, there's plenty of options, there's been an abundance of talk about Phase 3 films and Marvel has planned two dates for 2016 (May 6, July 8) and one for 2017 (May 5) without revealing what those films will be. But it wasn't meant to be if you were hoping to find out what they were. If you were expecting to receive announcements about "Dr. Strange" or "Black Panther" movies, or more casting about the "Avengers" sequel, it didn't happen.

Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr.
Very interesting, in light of last night’s potential negotiations impasse at Marvel Studios, are telling comments that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and the Big Kahuna (Marvel Head Kevin Feige) made to Entertainment Weekly in this past weekend’s cover story. In case you missed the brouhaha yesterday evening, it goes like this: Marvel is notoriously cheap with their salary offers to actors. This is how the company has always operated since they jumped into the feature film game in 2008 with the first “Iron Man.” But “The Avengers” was a billion dollar hit, “Iron Man 3” will soon be a billion dollar hit and the Marvel casts are still being paid lowball figures. With deals not in place for the upcoming 2015 tentpole, “The Avengers 2,” this could prove to be problematic for Marvel. The Avengers want to get paid.

The Avengers
As Marvel enters Phase Two of their cinematic universe, their business universe is also getting a bit of a shake up. No one could have really predicted that Phase One would end with the billion dollar earning "The Avengers," and that really changed the game. Wisely, Robert Downey Jr. had negotiated a deal for a cut of the profits which saw him pocket a cool $50 million. Not bad, right? Well, now imagine you're one of the actors that only got $200,000 for the movie. As you might guess, that is causing some serious friction as Marvel tries to lock everyone in for "The Avengers 2."

With "Iron Man 3" set to make, approximately, a kajillion dollars this weekend and Marvel's Phase Two already mapped out, Phase Three is now the focus of their attention. We already know "The Avengers 2" and "Ant-Man" will kick off what will be a banner year for Disney in 2015, but what's next after that? Of course, there's all kinds of speculation and options, particularly with "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." giving the comic company the chance to introduce even more characters to the Marvel-verse, and with the rights to even more of their catalog returning it's giving Kevin Feige plenty to play with.

Like a leaky nerd faucet, Marvel keeps the information flowing, albeit in servings that would strain to be called child's size. And yet, here we are, because the Marvel-verse is one of the most interesting gambles in recent memory at the movies that is only growing bigger and more successful with each passing year (leading up to a whopper of a 2015 for Disney). But before we get ahead of ourselves and talk Phase Three, there is still lots to come with Phase Two, starting with "Iron Man 3," which opens tomorrow, and EW sat down with Kevin Feige and grilled him on all things Marvel.

So, remember just over a week ago when Joss Whedon not-so-subtly teased that his script for "The Avengers 2" script contained, "two of my favorite characters from the comic book, a brother/sister act"? While he didn't come right out and say it, speculation centered on Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch -- sibling twin superheroes -- that thanks to complicated rights issues, are able to be used by both Marvel and 20th Century Fox. And it looks like the guesswork was spot on.
