Will Ferrell And Kevin Hart Attached To Star In The Comedy ‘Get Hard’; Warner Bros. May Acquire

For years, at least in some circles, comedian Kevin Hart was known as the uppity Smart Tech Customer who almost clapped up Jay (Romany Malco) in Judd Apatow's “The 40 Year Old Virgin.” The scene is hilarious, now a classic in some circles (definitely around The Playlist watercooler), and Hart stole the show. The dimunitive comedian (5'2") has since shot up. His 2011 stand-up comedy documentary “Laugh at My Pain” turned Tinstletown heads when it earned $2 million dollars in its first week of limited release. It was one of the most solid per screen averages of the year and the film, produced for only $750,000, eventually grossed $7 million. Clearly there was an audience out there for Kevin Hart that Hollywood was just waking up to.

The tale of Ken Jeong is a pretty awesome one. He was working as a doctor while honing his comedy chops at stand-up clubs, and eventually moved to L.A. and started pursuing a career in showbiz full time. He worked the comedy circuit, did guest stints on a bunch of shows, eventually fell in with the Apatow gang, and came to much bigger attention after his turn as the asshole doctor in "Knocked Up." From there came "The Hangover," then "Community" and the rest, as they say, is history. Now he's stepping up into bigger and better things.

Since starting his studio career off strong with the solid hit “Barbershop,” director Tim Story then slowly turned in a string of mediocre releases (“Taxi,” “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”) that finally had folks questioning how he made off so well the first time. However, things changed crucially at the start of 2012, as his adaptation of Steve Harvey's book, “Think Like a Man,” garnered both critical and box office acclaim (clocking in at $91 million domestic), as well as a brewing sequel. After working the grind of the comedy club circuit while picking up the occasional supporting film role, it seems actor/comedian Kevin Hart has finally reached, and even surpassed, the mainstream success that has recently graced Louis C.K. and Marc Maron among others. His comedy special “Laugh At My Pain” grossed more than $7 million on just 284 screens, while his starring role in the Tim Story-directed “Think Like a Man” helped that film reach $86 million on a $12 budget. Of course, now that Hart has proven himself a viable talent, studios are clamoring to place him front and center in their latest projects, and the first one finds him co-starring with another comedy star who previously struck box-office gold.

It shouldn’t have been a surprise, but “The Hunger Games” not only fell from the top spot after four weeks… it was pulverized. The Steve Harvey-powered “Think Like a Man” took advantage of a big ad campaign to debut to unprecedented numbers, scoring massive 'A' level approval from audiences reporting to Cinemascore while almost tripling its reported $12 million budget. This is the third big hit for Sony’s Screen Gems division this year, following “Underworld: Awakening” and “The Vow.” Not really the best studio to encourage, guys.

There was no pattern of box office success for 2011. One could point to the audience rejecting obvious pandering nerd bait like "Cowboys And Aliens," but then how does that explain "Transformers"? People can celebrate R-rated comedies, but what does that mean for "The Change-Up"? Few leading men and women appeared often in 2011, as it was a year dependent on concepts (mostly pre-established) as opposed to marquee names. And a lot of those new names are wise, lining up smaller projects in the coming year to diversify their portfolio rather than boost their paychecks.
