The Playlist's Most Anticipated Blockbusters Of The 2013 Summer Season
Ah, summer. That time of year marked by long days, short skirts, and the application of sunscreen. It’s the season where even the most hardened cineaste can put aside their Criterion Collection discs, if only for a moment, and get excited about the jazzy, visual effects-driven blockbusters coming down the pike. The line between “summer” and “any other time of the year,” in terms of movies, keeps getting blurrier and blurrier, with big-budget studio fare like “Oz the Great and Powerful” and “Oblivion” coming out in the spring (we had a Michael Bay movie open in April, for crying out loud – before this it was questionable whether or not he even existed outside of June or July).

Kick Ass 2, Chloe Moretz,
It looks like Spider-Man isn't the only superhero that's going to find high school to be an awkward experience. When we catch up with Mindy Macready in this summer's "Kick-Ass 2," she'll be doing her best to fit in, but it looks like the skills of her alter ego will help in finding a place among her teenage peers.

Lo-fi, featuring stars that weren't household names and stamped with an R-rating, "Kick-Ass" gleefully twisted the superhero genre on its head to the tune of $96 million worldwide. Given all the factors above, that's quite a feat and, no doubt boosted by home video exposure, a sequel was greenlit. But can lightning strike twice? Will director Jeff Wadlow be an adequate stand-in for Matthew Vaughn? Well, see for yourself as the first trailer for "Kick-Ass 2" has arrived.

Well, get out the pencil and eraser, because some dates are changing, and the biggest one of them all means you'll have to wait even longer for the finale of Peter Jackson's return to Middle Earth.

It may seem like the studios have forgotten they have some summer tentpoles to market, but just bear in a mind a few things. We're still in the midst of the awards season and the Sundance Film Festival just wrapped, so executives and marketing departments are temporarily preoccupied. Also, the Super Bowl is next weekend, and you can bet that it will be the launching pad for a half dozen major campaigns, so just sit tight. Until then, a few more images have arrived to tide you over.

It seemed like it was talked about forever and destined never to be made, but that all changed last year, and now we’re mere months away from “Kick-Ass 2” hitting theaters. Aaron Taylor-Johnson returns as the eponymous not-so-super superhero, as well as Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (whose Red Mist has upgraded to become The Mother Fucker). Matthew Vaughn has been replaced in the director’s chair by “Never Back Down” helmer Jeff Wadlow, while the latest additions to the cast include Donald Faison, Lindy Booth, John Leguizamo and newcomer Olga Kurkulina as the indomitable Mother Russia.

We can’t figure out whether to be excited or not about “Kick Ass 2: Balls to the Wall.” Sure the first film was all kinds of fun, and some of the new casting additions are pretty exciting -- most notably Jim Carrey. But on the other hand, there’s no Matthew Vaughn this time, and by all accounts Mark Millar’s comic wasn’t that great this time and it sounds as if it was going to need a lot of changes made to it before it could work on the big screen.

First up in a bit of a casting round-up today is news that Aussie actress Isabel Lucas (“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” and maybe Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups” if she makes the final cut) has signed up for “Careful What You Wish For.” The film will follow a self-conscious high school student who gets more than he bargained for when he starts an affair with the wife of a businessman (the role we’re assuming Lucas has taken), and discovers a devastating secret after a serious crime rocks their small town. Directed by Elizabeth Allen (“Aquamarine,” “Ramona and Beezus”), the film is described as a “sexy thriller reminiscent of “Basic Instinct,”” but we’d be surprised if Lucas lays herself quite as bare as Sharon Stone did.
