Plus Trailer For Takashi Shimizu & Christopher Doyle's Mad-Looking 'Rabbit Horror 3D'One of our favorite films at SXSW this year was "Kill List." The follow-up to Ben Wheatley's terrific, but woefully underseen gangster film "Down Terrace," it's a domestic drama, blended with a hitman thriller, mixed with a pastoral horror flick, that's not really like anything you've ever seen, and its basically guaranteed to leave you shaking for hours after: without saying too much, the film left one senior member of The Playlist team physically ill. In a good way. It was picked up by IFC Midnight, who'll release it later in the year, but a U.K. opening is more imminent, and a couple of trailers have arrived ahead of it.

Once again, Austin, Texas and the SXSW Film Festival kicked our ass this year. One week of great weather, tex-mex, bbq, a little booze, a little music (Big Krit ruled) and a looooot of movies. For the third year in a row The Playlist team descended down on the coolest little town in Texas and were witness to a panoply of movies, documentaries, sci-fi pictures, disturbing horror films, deep and/or genre-tinged dramas (the latter seemed to be a trend), rock docs, feel-good dramedies, filthy comedies and more.

SXSW Review: 'Kill List' Is A Shocking, Emotionally Resonant & Horrific Ride

Few movies have scarred and emotionally terrorized people (including some on the Playlist staff) more than this year's SXSW Film Festival entry "Kill List," the sophomore feature from Ben Wheatley ("Down Terrace"). With its intriguing mixture of kitchen-sink domestic drama, hit man thriller, and creepy mysticism, it's the rare horror film -- which isn't really a "horror film" per se, but includes psychological, emotional and physically horrifying moments -- that doesn't play into any conventions of the genre. Every time you think you've pegged it neatly into one of the aforementioned genres, it'll swing around and surprise you again, and the film concludes with an unexpected wallop that packs a visceral and psychically emotional punch that will leave you gasping for air and reeling on the floor. "Saw 3D" it's not.
