In recent years, film translations of stage hits haven't been as prevalent as they once were. You might get the occasional "Doubt" or "Rabbit Hole," for instance, but compared to the early days of the talkies, when a large proportion of movies were based on Broadway hits, it's been slim pickings; audiences and critics have learned that most attempts at stage-to-screen translation fail to make the material truly cinematic.

While it has been five long years since legendary filmmaker William Friedkin's last film, the underrated psychological thriller "Bug" starring Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon, it seems the director has found a fresh voice and communal spirit in Tracy Letts. The playwright's work served as the source material for "Bug" and Friedkin has once again found inspiration, turning Letts' first play, the black comedy "Killer Joe," into a feature length film.
