It was back in May when we last heard about Frank Darabont's brewing "L.A. Noir," and its status was uncertain. The pilot episode had wrapped, but a decision was still pending from TNT as to whether or not they would be pushing forward with it. Now, fourth months later, not only do we have our first moody image, it comes with the news that the network has ordered up a six-episode first season of the show. A nice rebound for Darabont after an acrimonious exit from "The Walking Dead."

Thomas Jane To Play Bugsy Siegel In Frank Darabont's 'L.A. Noir'

While Thomas Jane is best known for -- and usually relegated to -- roles that play on his physique and his overt whiff of testosterone, he's somewhat underrated. As anyone who watched HBO's excellent, funny and sadly cancelled "Hung" knows, Jane's man-meat persona was put to good use playing a gigolo in economically-ravaged Detroit, trying to make ends meet for his ex-wife and kids. He was great in the role, showing both the raw sexuality he can project and a tender, softer side as well. All this to say the dude has more range than you might expect, but then again, if you just want him to knock some heads, he can do that too.

Funnyman Simon Pegg will have to trade in his Starfleet uniform and phaser for a fedora and a gun as he's now set to join the pilot of Frank Darabont's gestating adaptation of John Buntin's epic saga "L.A. Noir: The Struggle For The Soul Of America's Most Seductive City" for the cable network TNT.

The story of the L.A.P.D. and Mickey Cohen will be the center of Ruben Flesicher's noir-pic "The Gangster Squad" later this year but there's another major production which is using the events as its story: Frank Darabont's teaming with TNT for "L.A. Noir."

Much like the characters that wonder aimlessly through the barren wastelands of the world following a zombie apocalypse, “The Walking Dead” has had a difficult journey from the page of the Robert Kurtzman-penned comic books to “Mad Men” home AMC. While the strong ratings certainly don’t reflect the behind-the-scenes turmoil that’s been aired quite publicly since the show’s debut on October 31, 2010, as you know things downhill fast when “The Shawshank Redemption” helmer Frank Darabont shocked many by quitting as showrunner of the series. A dream project he had been trying to get off the ground for years before AMC took a chance, Darabont walked away from the popular series due to clashes with the network over budget cuts and left behind a cast of many, that like a lot of viewers, signed on to the project based on Darabont’s name alone.

It seems fair to say that "The Shawshank Redemption" director Frank Darabont's first foray into television since his movie breakthrough came with mixed success. Despite basically being like every other zombie tale, just slower and more annoying, "The Walking Dead," an adaptation of the long-running comic book, became one of cable's biggest hits when it first aired in 2010. When he came to Comic-Con last year in support of the show, Darabont was high on the potential of a second series, but days later, he left the show, reportedly fired by AMC after clashing with the network over budget cuts.
