We're closing on the mid-way point to the year, with several of 2013's biggest movies already in theaters, but as fast as films hit theaters, the studios nab future release dates sometimes years away, hoping to stake their claim on key territory. After 6-9 months of fevered speculation and prognostication, the 2012/2013 awards season climaxed on Sunday night with the 85th Academy Awards, as Ben Affleck's "Argo" took Best Picture, Ang Lee won his second Best Director Oscar, Daniel Day-Lewis became the first person to win three Best Actor awards, Christoph Waltz took his second Supporting trophy in four years, and Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence won their first awards.

Tobey Maguire's career in recent years resembles a guy who won the lottery. Between 2002 and 2007, the period of the three Sam Raimi-led "Spider-Man" films, the now-37-year-old actor only worked on two films in between the trilogy -- "Seabiscuit" and the supporting role in "The Good German." Post "Spider-Man 3," the actor has all of three credits on screen. The voice work he did for "Beyond All Boundaries," his severely underrated performance in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" and "The Details," a Weinstein Company indie that was shown at Sundance in 2011 which the studio is apparently releasing this fall via their VOD Radius shingle.

With "Young Adult" barely out of our minds, lensing is excitingly already underway on Jason Reitman's next directorial effort, an adaptation of Joyce Maynard's coming-of-age story "Labor Day." The project has now added a trio of talent with Alexie Gilmore ("World's Greatest Dad"), Lucas Hedges ("Moonrise Kingdom") and Brooke Smith ("Grey's Anatomy") all joining in unnamed supporting roles. The story centers on an escaped convict (Josh Brolin) who is taken in by a depressed single mother (Kate Winslet) and her teen son (Gattlin Griffith) over a Labor Day weekend with Clark Gregg, Tom Lipinski, Maika Monroe, Brighid Fleming and James Van Der Beek also co-starring. Long relegated to post-credit sequences and scene-stealing bit parts as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel movies, it was nice to see actor Clark Gregg gain a little more screen time in this past weekend’s superhero brouhaha “The Avengers.” Granted, the silver screen was still mostly dedicated to the sweaty, muscle-bound (sometimes green) dudes in spandex, but Gregg had more than his share of moments, and has been consistently good with small parts in films like “(500) Days of Summer” and “The Usual Suspects.” He’s a bit part character actor who deserves a movie all his own – in fact he’s been in a few diverting short films entitled “Marvel One-Shots” centered on Agent Coulson—but for now he’s looking to move into some promising adult fare.

Could this mark the final stage of a comeback for James Van Der Beek? The "Dawson's Creek" star hasn't quite matched the post-show success of Michelle Williams, Joshua Jackson or even Katie Holmes, but 2012 seems to be a bit of a turning point. He's a regular on the new ABC series "Don't Trust The B---- In Apt. 23" and despite roles in a string of less than notable movies over the past few years (and that's not counting his infamous deleted scenes from Todd Solodnz's "Storytelling"), he's now notched a role that will find him acting opposite Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin. Not bad.

First, we have a question: Does anyone watch USA network's "Suits"? If so, is it any good? While we wait for answer, it seems Jason Reitman is a fan, casting actor Tom Lipinski in his upcoming film "Labor Day." The twist here is that he'll be playing the younger version of Josh Brolin (who himself plays the younger version of Tommy Lee Jones in "Men In Black III" -- this will all make a good movie trivia question some day).

It's official: movie number five for Jason Reitman will be "Labor Day," and it will be produced through Paramount Pictures. This romantic drama, which sounds like quite a departure, finds a single mother who takes in a mysterious drifter with a dangerous past. Things get heated, erupting in a passionate affair over the titular holiday. While this seems like the type of thing we'd love with Shelly Winters and Robert Mitchum from the pen of Tennessee Williams, instead this is from the book by Joyce Maynard, with Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin as the illicit couple. Eh, not a huge downgrade.
