Welcome back to the newly renamed Von TrierList, with the latest update from Cannes on the horrifying controversy the storm in a teacup that followed Lars Von Trier's comments at a press conference for his latest film about his 'Nazi' heritage, and the subsequent statement by festival officials announcing that the director was now "persona non grata" on the Croisette. The latest being that the director has responded to his 'ban.'

Cannes Review: Lars Von Trier Confronts Depression Head On In The Grim 'Melancholia'

Two years after Lars Von Trier caused a major stir at Cannes with his contentious "Antichrist," the enfant terrible returns to the Croisette in a much more subdued mood with "Melancholia." Despite the premise, which sounds tailor-made for Von Trier to provoke and prod his audience, the film is easily the most restrained the director has been "Europa." Essentially shock free, the operatic, three act film plays more like an Ingmar Bergman chamber piece than anything else and the biggest surprise is just how contemplative Von Trier is this time around.

As we've already discussed this morning, Lars von Trier is something of a provocateur, a trickster. So, when he told the Cannes press conference that followed the first screening of his latest picture, the apocalyptic "Melancholia," that "My next film, and Kirsten [Dunst] demanded it, will be porn. That's how women are. Really hard core. That's what I'm writing now," while sat next to the ashen-faced "Spider-Man" star, you'll forgive us for not taking him too seriously. Except, as it turns out, he may not have been joking.

"“If I have hurt someone this morning by the words I said at the press conference, I sincerely apologise. I am not antisemitic or racially prejudiced in any way, nor am I a Nazi.”

Particularly when it was one as seemingly outlandish as a collaboration between him and Martin Scorsese.

New Picture From 'Melancholia'; Lars Von Trier Says Kirsten Dunst "Got Off Easy" During Filming

As we've read and witnessed already, thanks to an early trailer, Lars Von Trier's latest film, "Melancholia," is about two sisters who find their relationship challenged as a nearby planet threatens to collide into the Earth. So it's a sci-fi-tinged picture, but as the trailer evinces it's also like a wedding-based melodrama -- "Margot At The Wedding As We're All Doomed," or something, with shades of Bergman. It looks much more like a film about psychological angst, anxiety and human ugliness (natch, it's Von Trier) than it does an end-of-days apocalyptic picture.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise on a Friday morning -- the first trailer for the new Lars Von Trier movie, the end-of-the-world drama, "Melancholia." Coming off the single most controversial film of his career, "Antichrist," the beginning of this clip, which has debuted at the film's official site (via @TimeOutFilm), might take fans of the unpredictable Danish helmer by surprise -- it strikes one as a rather conventional wedding-set drama, reminiscent of "Rachel Getting Married," or even Dogme classic "Festen."
