Cannes Review: The Bondurant Boys Deal Moonshine & Violence In John Hillcoat's Lively 'Lawless'

"It's not violence that sets men apart, it's the distance they're willing to go," Forrest Bonduarant (Tom Hardy) tells his youngest brother Jack (Shia LaBeouf) in "Lawless." And with a set of brass knuckles in his pocket and a pistol in his waistband, he knows what he's talking about. That theme is one that has carried John Hillcoat through his last two pictures "The Proposition" and "The Road," and once again he explores men and their relationship with violence in "Lawless," a picture that while highly entertaining, doesn't quite match the heights of his previous efforts.

A week from today, the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival will be getting underway on the south coast of France, opening with Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," and as ever, it's possibly the biggest date in the cinephile calendar, with a host of hotly-anticipated films set to premiere over the ten days that follow. A jury headed up by Nanni Moretti, and also including Andrea Arnold, Ewan McGregor, Alexander Payne, Diane Kruger and Jean-Paul Gaultier will have to decide which of over twenty films to award the Palme d'Or to, but while the competition will be typically fierce in competition, there's plenty of gems to find in the Directors' Fortnight, Un Certain Regard and Critics' Week sidebars too.

While "The Avengers" officially kicked off the summer movie season to the tune of $200 million dollars this weekend, Christmas for arthouse fans is just around the corner with the Cannes Film Festival. Granted, it's one of the more mainstream movies hitting the fest, but anticipation is running high for John Hillcoat's "Lawless." And one movie that wasn't ready in time, but that is also being eyed is Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina" and for both, some new pics have arrived to stoke the flames of ancipiation.

After a very long wait, we finally got the trailer for John Hillcoat's "Lawless" a couple of days ago, and while it was a bit more conventional that we were expecting, it should be remembered that trailers for Hillcoat's films have never done them justice in the slightest, and with the cast he's got lined up here, there's a strong reason why this remains very high on our Must See List for 2012.

The anticipation for John Hillcoat's "Lawless" -- formerly known as "The Wettest County In The World" and then just "The Wettest County" -- has been nearly unbearable. Going through a few release date shifts, and the aforementioned title change, fans eager for the film got a great boost of good news when it was announced last week that the film landed a coveted In Competition slot at the Cannes Film Festival. What at first seemed like The Weinstein Company moving around and tinkering with a movie they didn't know what to do with, instead looks like the studio positioning the film for the best rollout possible.

While we've seen photos of Tom Hardy solo and Shia LaBeouf and Hardy together, now we've finally got our first look at the three brothers who star in John Hillcoat's prohibition-era gangster drama "Lawless," formerly known as "The Wettest County" courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. The third in this triumvirate is relative newcomer Jason Clarke, an Australian actor who's on the rise with upcoming roles in Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty," and Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby."

Audiences have a strong awareness of Guy Pearce, but are they ready to see him as an action hero? In “Lockout,” Pearce plays disgraced special agent Snow, forced on a suicide mission to rescue the President’s daughter from a riot happening outside of the Earth’s atmosphere, in the middle of a dangerous space prison. But while Pearce’s wisecracking Snow gives and receives his share of punches, the actor wasn’t entirely certain at first that this would be an action-heavy role.

Terrence Malick is well known for shooting endless amounts of footage, most of which we'll never see, but it seems for this upcoming duo of movies "Knight Of Cups" and the tentatively titled "Lawless," not only can he not turn off the camera, celeb friends are popping up everywhere as he continues to roll. Neon Indian dude Alan Palomo, The Cult and Matthew McConaughey are some of the faces that were snapped shooting scenes at SXSW a couple of weeks back, and now, yet another celeb has been spied shooting scenes with Malick and co.

Just days after we revealed that John Hillcoat's upcoming prohibition drama "The Wettest County" had changed its name to "Lawless" (with Terrence Malick's blessing no less), Entertainment Weekly has given us what is essentially the first official look at the film (everything seen thus far has been set photos, albeit really good ones in some cases).
