After taking on the role of Gale Hawthorne in the wildly-anticipated film adaptation of "The Hunger Games," Variety has announced that Liam Hemsworth will appear in the indie drama "AWOL" for first-time director Danny Mooney. Written by Jim Burnstein and Garrett Schiff, the film is based on a true story of a soldier (Austin Stowell) in Vietnam who is dumped by his girlfriend (Aimee Teegarden). Hemsworth will play the best friend who joins the the soldier in going AWOL ("Absent Without Leave") in order to return to the states to get her back. The story's action will be set against the backdrop of an anti-war movement at the University of Michigan. The Weinstein Company may have another Oscar darling on their hands. A year after grabbing $400 million worldwide and scads of major awards for “The King’s Speech,” The Brothers W paid $7 million for the domestic rights (via Deadline) to another film about British aristocracy, nabbing “The Iron Lady” starring Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. Producers only showed five minutes of the film before the bidding started between the Weinsteins, Summit and Relativity, though all someone had to say was “Streep as Thatcher” to ensure this would be a major purchase and, as planned by TWC, a high profile late ‘11 release. Expect it to be a big dog in the awards race.

Finally, the wait for fangirls (and boys) everywhere is over. Lionsgate announced today that Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth are officially cast -- after being outed as frontrunners last week -- as Peeta and Gale, respectively, in the company's huge tentpole adaptation "The Hunger Games." The boys join female lead Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss; Hutcherson plays Lawrence's love interest when she's placed in an arena to fight for her life, while Hemsworth is Lawrence's best friend waiting at home. The decision comes at the end of a long wait for casting choices. Other candidates for the parts included Hunter Parrish of "Weeds" and Lucas Till of the upcoming "X-Men: First Class" for Peeta and Disney star Drew Roy for Gale.
