HBO Films Backs Steven Soderbergh's Liberace Pic 'Behind The Candelabra'; Set For Summer 2012 Shoot

While Steven Soderbergh has never been busier -- "Contagion" hit theaters last month, "Magic Mike" is now shooting and "Haywire" will hit theaters in early 2012 -- he's gained even more attention since reports of his impending hiatus/retirement. But don't worry, he's not going anywhere anytime soon, as the man still has lots to do. Of course, there is the Warner Bros. tentpole "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." in development, but while that one is still looking for a leading man after George Clooney had to bow out, Soderbergh's long-gestating Liberace pic "Behind The Candelabra" is moving forward.

Plans to shoot Steven Soderbergh's "Liberace" have been thrown around a bit over the last year mainly due to the medical issues that plagued star Michael Douglas, but the actor has now come out noting the previously planned fall start later this year might still be in the works.

Unsurprisingly Thinks Ben Affleck Deserved An Oscar Nomination For 'The Town'Last we heard, Steven Soderbergh was clearing his final batch of products, preparing his exit from the world of movie directing to take up painting, a pastime he has quietly but studiously pursued for quite some time. Well, retirement is still in the cards but it might just have to wait as his film projects may keep him busier a little longer than expected.

Matt Damon Says Steven Soderbergh Is Dead Serious About Retiring By 51OK, so this isn't exactly new and it's something Steven Soderbergh has mentioned a couple times over the last two years so, but the acclaimed director has long been considering retiring once his recent slate of pictures is complete. Back in the fall of 2009, he said he wasn't keen on still directing past of the age of 50 and that he hoped to retire within four years. And it looks like he's still sticking to that plan.

Role Will Require Prosthetic Work & Musical TrainingA double dose of good news in this story. Firstly, Michael Douglas, who has been valiantly battling throat cancer appears to be very much on the mend and in his first post-illness interview with The Hollywood Reporter (definitely worth a read) the actor reveals that Steven Soderbergh's "Liberace" is very much going to happen.

Damon Say He's "Thrilled" Door Is Open For A Paul Greengrass-Led Return; Says 'Liberace' Still Aiming To Shoot In The Summer Of 2011 Despite Douglas' Battle With CancerNo sooner did Matt Damon say that "no one bothered" to call him regarding the Tony Gilroy-to-direct-"The Bourne Legacy"-announcement and all hell broke loose on the Internet. While Damon did sound partly miffed, those comments were soon expounded upon to be some sort of angry 'Bourne-gate' by overzealous writers (let's face it, as we said, Damon was aware this was happening and his newer comments essentially admit as much).
