Let's just get this out of the way: making snap judgements about a movie based on ten minutes of footage is a bit ridiculous, but that said, first impressions mean a lot. It wasn't a fun week for Peter Jackson at CinemaCon who saw his 48 fps preview of "The Hobbit" heavily scrutinized, with many (including pushover fanboys) not finding favor with the hyper-realistic results of the new fancy schmanzy high-def footage. So today, Fox must've felt some butterflies when they decided to show footage from Ang Lee's big budget adaptation of "Life Of Pi," a movie that has been flying well under the radar so far. Well, not anymore.

Adapting best-selling novels is never an easy job and, in the case of Ang Lee and "Life Of Pi," it's a task made only more difficult by the off-beat tale centering on the shipwrecked son of an Indian zookeeper who's stuck on a lifeboat with a 450-pound bengal tiger in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

And so we get to put all this talk of what might get nominated, what might win, and who will definitely win, to bed for a year.

Not every movie can star Robert Downey Jr or Johnny Depp; the most in-demand talents only have a certain amount of time, and sometimes you just have to go with a Channing Tatum or Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. And the same thing is true across all aspects of film production; Roger Deakins can't lens every film, for instance, and Hans Zimmer can't score everything, opening things up for those who, for whatever reason, have never quite gotten the acclaim of those above them in the hierarchy. For instance, take Mychael Danna.

Picture Will Shoot In 3D; Release Date Set For December 14, 2012Ang Lee hasn't had the easiest few years since "Brokeback Mountain." While that film saw him win the Best Director award at the Oscars, his next film, "Lust, Caution," was tarred with an NC-17 for its explicit sex scenes, and follow-up "Taking Woodstock" received mediocre reviews, and basically disappeared without a trace on its release in 2009.
