Dear faithful readers, we hope you enjoyed your day of stuffed animals, roses, and antacids in the shape of little hearts. Or maybe you just got drunk and ate cheesecake (after which you probably needed a couple of those Rolaids disguised as candy). Holiday traditions are the best, aren't they? Well, in case you didn't get enough of the love, there's plenty going around in theaters this weekend. A(nother) fantastical being falls hard for a(nother) human, John McClane bonds with his son, a call girl finds herself torn between a client and her fiancé, paramours turn pathological in an Indian remake, and one more Nicholas Sparks lovefest sobathon -- er, novel -- gets a silver screen adaptation. Perennial Iranian director/legend Abbas Kiarostami’s second filmmaking-holiday (the first being the wonderful “Certified Copy”) finds him in Japan, observing two days in the life of an unlikely trio: a student moonlighting as a call girl, her aged, patriarchal client, and the woman’s hot-head boyfriend. “Like Someone In Love” contains many of the auteur’s persistent fascinations -- long car rides, lengthy conversation, numerous off camera actions and characters, leisurely pacing -- but has the unfortunate position of coming directly after a very unique, wonderful piece of cinema. Reactions have been quite mixed since its first festival appearance early this year (our man at Cannes was not as impressed while this writer thought it was lovely) but most can agree that it’s a visually stunning film with plenty of substance to ruminate on.

Two film festival favorites from 2012 are slated to be hitting theaters in the coming months via IFC Flims, and some new clips are available for your viewing pleasure. The first, from “Like Someone In Love,” arriving on screen this Friday, shows the young prostitute Akiko (Rin Takanashi) protesting her assignment to a particular elderly client. Director Abbas Kiarostami’s characteristic leisurely pacing comes into play, and it’s a captivating scene -- if partly because of the voyeuristic sense that comes with a seedy story about prostitution in the foreign setting of Tokyo.

After hitting the festival circuit last year -- it played at Cannes, TIFF and the New York Film Festival, among others -- Abbas Kiarostami’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed Euro-set “Certified Copy,” the companion piece and Japan-set “Like Someone In Love," is finally hitting theatres stateside this month. With little under a week to go, a U.S. trailer has finally been released by the distributor.

As months on the movie calendar go, February is one of the quieter ones. It doesn't have the Oscar leftovers, or sheer terribleness of January, meanwhile, the hopeful blockbusters of the spring and summer still seem far, far away. But that doesn't mean that there's nothing worth seeing.

It's taken over a month to unveil the expansive, hugely exciting lineup for this year's Toronto International Film Festival, and with opening night (the premiere of Rian Johnson's "Looper") a little over two weeks away, the slate was finally completed this morning by a selection of announcements from the Masters, Mavericks and Discovery strands of the festival.
