While high-profile Oscar contenders like Best Picture winner "Argo," "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Django Unchained" all had various amounts of haterade poured all over them, one movie that was pretty much untouchable all season long was "Life Of Pi." Outside of the whole mini VFX controversy thing -- which really only happened after the Oscars -- Ang Lee and his film were embraced by the industry, winning four statuettes for Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Score and Best Visual Effects. But certainly, not everyone was taken with the movie.

The 2013 Oscar season finally came to an end with the 85th Academy Awards. The major prizes of the night went to "Argo," which, as expected, won Best Picture, Ang Lee took Best Director, while Christoph Waltz, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Day-Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence won the acting prizes.

Well, that's a wrap. The two bigger winners of the night were "Argo," which one the coveted Best Picture award and three awards total, and "Life of Pi," which took home the most statuettes of the evening including Best Director for Ang Lee (which we called in our predictions). The one relative "surprise" of the night early on (though a late groundswell started in recent weeks) was Christoph Waltz for "Django Unchained," beating out Robert De Niro and Tommy Lee Jones. But the show was a brutally longwinded snore and the musical segments didn't help. Host Seth MacFarlane had mixed results, but fared better than we expected and had a few admittedly killer jokes. All and all though, pacing wise, it was a crushingly slow and laborious show. More analysis tomorrow, this thing tired us out.

As you watched President Lincoln on screen go through painstaking efforts in order to have the thirteenth amendment passed in Congress, you probably thought that particular part of history is long behind us. After all, the events portrayed in the film happened nearly 150 years ago. Well, that’s not quite the case, as University of Mississippi associate professor Dr. Ranjan Batra discovered soon after watching the film.

Talk about tapping a demographic. With the film already up over $170 million at home helping push the worldwide total over $220 million, it's safe to say that Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" is a box office smash, and a critical one as well. And yet, the movie has faded from the Oscar conversation, with Ben Affleck's "Argo" racing into the frontrunner position. But that doesn't mean the campaigning ends. After a segment on "60 Minutes" last fall, Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis have returned to the show again, for yet another look at the film.

We are a little over two weeks out from Oscar night, and today sees the opening of the second phase of voting. Right now, and over the next ten days, Academy members will be filling out ballots and deciding who's actually going to be taking home the statues on Sunday, February 24th.

The Oscars aren't the only major awards ceremony in February that will attract movie stars and airheaded red carpet commentators in equal measure. Across the pond, the BAFTAs will hand out their trophies a couple weeks earlier, and attendees will get something nice too, just for showing up.

Earlier: The oft-repeated maxim is that the Golden Globes do not matter. They do not. However, if you take the polar opposites of the season of critic awards (high-brow, cerebral) and the Globes (extremely populist), you can often (when also considering more significant Guild awards, of course) split the difference and land where the Academy Awards ultimately will.

So, the editing awards right? It's usually the part of the Oscar broadcast that for many is a good time to hit the bathroom, or refill on cheese dip, but to those who know their awards history, it's an important category. Usually, a nomination for Best Picture and Best Editing indicates a strong than usual shot to take the big prize, and winning the category, has often proven in the past to be the first step to victory at the end end of evening. And today, the American Cinema Editors (ACE) announced the nominations for the 63rd Annual ACE Eddie Awards, which could indicate where the votes go in February.
