It's the end of a busy-ass awards week, and a pretty crucial one as far as the Oscar season goes. Within the space of a few days, we've had the LA Film Critics Circle announcements, the Critics Choice Award nods, the SAG nominations and, this morning, the Golden Globe nominees being revealed.

In one of the bigger weeks of the awards season (bar Oscar nominations week itself), we've already seen the LA Film Critics Awards, the Critics Choice Awards and the SAG Awards, among others, hand down their winners or nominees for the films and actors of the past twelve months. And this morning, the Academy's black sheep cousin (the one who turns up at family gatherings for the free booze, namedrops about the time he met Johnny Depp, then leaves), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, have announced their nominees for their 70th Golden Globe Awards.

Just when you think that awards season might follow the Critics Choice Awards with no real surprises, the Screen Actors Guild have thrown something of a curveball into the mix with the nods for their annual awards. Led by "Lincoln" and "Silver Linings Playbook" with four nominations apiece (as was expected), the guild have very much stuck with the establishment this year, with big names favored in almost every case over breakout actors or 'difficult' films.

Another day, another set of awards nominations, and while the rest of the week brings the SAG and Golden Globes announcements, today is the turn of the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards (generally known as the Critics Choice Awards), a mainstream-leaning group now in their 18th year. A little more high-profile than some, thanks to having their ceremony televised of late, they've embraced stardom even more this year, with the introduction of various A-list-attracting categories like Best Actor/Actress in a Comedy.

More rankings! As Oscar prognosticators puzzle, fret and worry over each top ten list that drops, a few patterns are becoming clear -- firstly, everyone loves "Zero Dark Thirty." And secondly, it looks like outside of a couple of categories, Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" won't be making much of a mark on the Oscar race. And indeed, the AFI shut it out entirely.

With each passing day, it's looking more and more like Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" is going to be the one to beat this awards season. As we cautioned earlier this week, this trajectory right now reminds us of David Fincher's "The Social Network," which got all kinds of critical and industry love, only to lose out to Tom Hooper's "The King's Speech" in the end. Granted, "Les Miserables" is no longer looking like a slam dunk with early reviews decidedly mixed (read ours here) but all this to say, there is still a lot the game to be played.

This week's "Killing Them Softly" is something of an outlier this season, in that it runs at a brisk 97 minutes. As has been noted by many -- not least a seemingly ADD-afflicted senior Variety staffer -- many of the big movies in awards contention have come with epic running times.

With Thanksgiving over and done with, we've arguably reached the mid-point of the awards season. Things will be kicking off with the Independent Spirit nominations arriving tomorrow, and the New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review following next week. And with Oscar ballots going out not long after, almost every film has been screened, with "Les Miserables" and "Zero Dark Thirty" making their debuts over the weekend to press and industry types, leaving "Django Unchained" the last major contender to be seen by critics. And many of the big movies, including "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Life Of Pi" most recently, have now been seen by audiences too.

Nothing says Thanksgiving like turkey, football, and Michael Sheen’s wildly inappropriate laughter. Minor anomalies amidst the numbers suggest there is a chance we’re looking at the biggest 'Twilight' film thus far, as “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2“ dominated the marketplace once again to lead the biggest Thanksgiving weekend in box office history. Its pace remains slightly below series best 'New Moon,' but it looks like it should finish ahead of the other films in the franchise.
