The rest of the month may be comprised of releases desperate to avoid "The Avengers" and the onslaught of summer blockbusters. But few studios thought that their movies would become the meat in an "Avengers"-"The Hunger Games" blockbuster sandwich, as the Lionsgate beast held remarkably steady in week four, suggesting that $400 million domestic may be in play after the film already crossed $500 million worldwide.

Happy Friday the 13th everyone! Jason is putting on the hockey mask and black cats everywhere are doing wind sprints to make sure they won’t miss you when you walk past. Not sure how to beat all the bad luck? Try going to the movies (and leaving your umbrella at home)! Toads and goldfish aren’t allowed in theaters and there are no mirrors to break or cracks in the floor to step on. Plus, the horror, thriller, romantic comedy, and documentary films coming out this weekend should provide great distraction. But be sure to bring some salt with you. Just in case.

Audiences have a strong awareness of Guy Pearce, but are they ready to see him as an action hero? In “Lockout,” Pearce plays disgraced special agent Snow, forced on a suicide mission to rescue the President’s daughter from a riot happening outside of the Earth’s atmosphere, in the middle of a dangerous space prison. But while Pearce’s wisecracking Snow gives and receives his share of punches, the actor wasn’t entirely certain at first that this would be an action-heavy role.

In the futurist world of "Lockout," most deadly convicts will be confined to MS-One, a maximum security prison floating in outer space. It’s not long from now (2079, to be exact) strongly suggesting the cultural shift in our society’s interest in interstellar exploration has gone from possibly exploring other planets to merely depositing our human detritus into the galaxy’s gaping maw. It’s a good thing most of these cryosleeping convicts are deranged, irredeemable nutcases, right?

“He's the best there is, but he's a loose cannon.” With that impeccably delivered line, Guy Pearce was built up for sci-fi action hero status in the trailer for the Luc Besson-produced “Lockout.” Europacorp has now followed that statement up with proof, in the form of the film's first five minutes, and they're completely implausible, nonsensically plotted, and oh yeah -- pretty damned entertaining as well.

We’ve long passed the point where Luc Besson’s name attached to a thriller could get us excited, and we suspect that “Lockout” won’t be the film that causes us to reconsider that particular standpoint. Starring Guy Pearce as a wrongly accused convict, and Maggie Grace as the President’s daughter who gets kidnapped (AGAIN!!!), Pearce must free Grace from a futuristic space prison that has been overrun by the inmates if he is to clear his name.

Wavering somewhere between a plain dumb action movie and a knowing riff on the plain dumb action movie, we continue to be cautiously optimistic about "Lockout" but this new, extended 5 minute look at footage at the film highlights both the good and the bad of what we can expect from the film when it opens in a couple of weeks.

Guy Pearce is one of our favorites -- let's get this guy an Oscar already -- and while his next flick "Lockout" won't get him any awards season play, we're still dying to see it. Why? Because in the Luc Besson-produced movie, Pearce is going full throttle into action hero mode, complete with more one liners than the Cannon Video catalog, and packing rippin' biceps to boot. In this clip from the movie, Maggie Grace once again plays "annoying," which she does pretty well, while Pearce patiently tries to shut her up and get her back home. Feels like we time warped back to a movie from 1987....in a good way. Oh, and a bit of positive news: this just got moved up a week to April 13th.
