Looking at William Monahan’s body of work, it’s hard to determine which is more impressive, what he’s already done, or what he has coming up. “Kingdom of Heaven” was his first produced screenplay, and that was followed by Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winner “The Departed” and Ridley Scott’s Middle East opus “Body of Lies.” He has a number projects in the works after the release of his directorial debut, “London Boulevard” -- starring Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley -- which arrives in theaters this weekend, and those include writing duties on “Sin City 2” for director Robert Rodriguez and “The Gambler” for Scorsese. The Playlist caught up with Monahan recently for a conversation about “London Boulevard,” and he offered a detailed, no-holds-barred portrait of his creative process, examining the film’s influences, artistic aspirations, and even some of its shortcomings. Additionally, he discussed the film in the context of his increasingly eclectic career, and talked about how he wants to continue to wear multiple hats as a screenwriter producer and director.

11/11/11! Did you make a wish? I was writing this column at 11:11 a.m. and missed it by one minute. Oh well, I don't much go in for that superstitious stuff, but I hope all your 11:11 wishes and hopes and dreams come true. This weekend at the theater is a weird mix of prestige and flat out horrible crap. For every "J. Edgar," you get a "Jack and Jill;" for every "Melancholia," there's an "Immortals." What are you gonna do?!

Ok, you can't really anticipate a film if you've already seen it, right? And while that doesn't apply for every member of The Playlist, many of us were lucky enough to get early sneak peeks at 2011 by attending film festivals around the globe like the Cannes, Toronto and Vancouver Film Festivals, the Melbourne Film Festival, the London Film Festival and more; yes, we're global. We basically ran through our lists of the films coming out in 2011 that we've already seen and made a list of 27 worth discussing. Not all of them are great, some are downright terrible, and some are pictures you should absolutely go out of your way to see. It's a mixed bag, much like a film festival generally is, but consider it our user's guide to the 2011 films we know the most about; and take the info to follow under consideration when shelling out your hard-earned dollar. We're here for you, really.

It's quite rare for a screenwriter to become something of a brand name, particularly with fewer than half a dozen produced credits, and, while William Monahan may not mean a huge amount to the general public, his is a name that tends to make film geeks prick up their ears. In the decade since he worked on the aborted project "Tripoli" with Ridley Scott, Monahan's become one of the most in-demand writers around. Scott may have botched his excellent crusades script "Kingdom of Heaven" by casting Orlando Bloom in the lead, but the writer can't have minded too much, as only a year later he was picking up an Academy Award for his work on Martin Scorsese's "The Departed."

Most Obvious Use Of "London Calling" EverSet to hit UK cinemas in four weeks, it's about time that a trailer for writer William Monahan's directorial debut "London Boulevard" hit, but upon viewing, it's easy to see why rumblings on this one were not positive and it explains the film's absence from any festival runs this year.
