Lone Survivor
Your average rock, tree, or branch will never appear harmless after “Lone Survivor.” With its depiction of warfare in Afghanistan moved to the unlikely setting of evergreens and jagged cliffs, the most horrific moments of director Peter Berg’s drama come from a body in free fall—and its eventual landing upon each. Never mind the fact that surrounding Taliban forces rain gunfire and RPGs down upon four injured American soldiers out on a recon mission; nature is the true enemy, and the extent of its cruelty is explored to the fullest over the course of the film’s harrowing two hours.

Lone Survivor
Peter Berg's "Lone Survivor" starring Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana was a bit of a question mark earlier in the year, but it's already already garnering positive survival narrative comparisons to solid pictures that have already screened this year like "Gravity," "Captain Phillips," "All Is Lost" and "12 Years A Slave" (that's pretty terrific company to be in).

Her, Joaquin Phoenix
November has rolled around, so it's officially that time of year: the holiday movie season. Both the L.A. Times and the New York Times have gotten deep into the action with great features in their movie sections which provide a heap of new photos from several highly anticipated movies. First up is a film we've already seen (read our NYFF review here), but one that's highly anticipated by many of us who haven't seen it nonetheless: Spike Jonze's "Her" (December 18th, in limited release), which features the stellar cast of Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde and Chris Pratt.

Another Oscar player in the mix? With Peter Berg's "Lone Survivor" getting a late season contending run, Universal is certainly hoping the film has a chance at getting a little awards season boost, and if the true story captures the attention of audiences and voters, you never know.

When Peter Berg's upcoming war drama "Lone Survivor" was recently given a January 10, 2014 release date, we have to admit, we immediately figured it to be another Mark Wahlberg, early winter programmer (see "Contraband" and "Broken City") and we put it in the back of our minds. But now, it looks like we'll have to sit up and pay a bit of attention as this could be mixing it up in the awards season race.

Unknown ObjectWith Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch and Taylor Kitsch already on board for Peter Berg's Navy SEAL flick "Lone Survivor," you might think the cast couldn't get any beefier. But that's where you're mistaken.

Three years ago, when director Peter Berg promised Universal their tentpole adaptation of “Battleship” in exchange for his low-budget Navy SEAL actioner “Lone Survivor” down the line, the studio couldn’t have predicted that a similar SEAL film, “Act of Valor,” would domestically trounce their sure bet at the box office. However, the low-budget route proved viable yet again, and now the studio is ramping up Berg’s more personal film, moving the project into production right away, and assembling a strong cast that has attracted another young actor today.

"It was pretty obvious to me [Universal] weren't jumping head over heels to make a war film in the Middle East right now," Peter Berg said way back in 2009. "So they said, 'What if you give us 'Battleship' for July 2011, and we guarantee you'll follow with 'Lone Survivor'? " While the timeline may have shifted, it looks like a deal is a deal and the studio is making good on their word (it probably didn't hurt that "Act Of Valor" topped the box office over the weekend either) and ramping up Peter Berg's Navy SEALs flick "Lone Survivor."

There's nothing like blasting a few bullets into the head of the world's most wanted man to make your profession all the rage. And that's what Navy SEAL Team 6 did by storming the compound of Osama Bin Laden a few weeks back. Since then, they've been everywhere, and of course, Hollywood has been all over them: Kathryn Bigelow's already-in-development "Kill Bin Laden," for which writer Mark Boal had spent some time tracking the group, suddenly became the hottest project in town, while Disney waited a whole 48 hours before trying to trademark the term 'SEAL Team 6.'
