Sundance has the indie cred. Cannes gets the big names in world cinema, and the best parties. Venice has the best location, and often the most interesting line-up. Berlin contains the hidden gems. SXSW is the up-and-comer. Telluride has the mountain air. But increasingly, the Toronto International Film Festival is becoming the most important in the film industry.

"Looper
With Rian Johnson stirring up time travel, hitmen and god knows what else in his upcoming, highly ambitious "Looper," it will take a deft hand to not only balance all the elements at play, but also provide something fresh and original. But so far, it looks the man who changed with the game with film noir in "Brick" and twisted the con artist in "The Brothers Bloom" is doing just that, and this first clip from the movie is particularly compelling.

The summer movie seasons is pretty much wrapped up, with the Venice Film Festival kicking off this week, and Telluride and Toronto just around the corner. And as ever, the fall festival season sees us move away from superheroes and the like for a few blessed months, in favor of some fare that's a little more adult, and geared with an eye towards awards.

As the summer film season slows to a halt with lessening explosions, it’s time to look forward to festivals like Venice, TIFF and Telluride, which will offer us a taste of what we can expect during the upcoming fall/awards seasons run. One film that will be playing TIFF, however, “Brick” director Rian Johnson’s sci-fi actioner “Looper,” is starting a marketing rollout akin to so many of those big summer tentpoles.

While there is a plethora of fantastic movies headed to Toronto this year, only one will have the distinction of kicking everything off at TIFF and the honor in 2012 goes to Rian Johnson's "Looper." And indeed, it will give audiences at the festival a helluva ride to start off ten days of moviegoing madness.

After eight years of governating, are audiences ready for the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger as a regular big screen presence? With the actor closing in on 70, the window for action movie roles is quickly closing, but he's making the most of it. "The Expendables 2" opens this weekend, he's got "The Last Stand" arriving in theaters in January and he's getting ready to roll on the cop thriller "Breacher." And also on the way is "The Tomb," another flick with his buddy Slyvester Stallone, and the first official image has dropped.

It was movie nerd Christmas morning today as TIFF unwrapped their first wave of titles for the festival in September and it's bountiful, with new films from Terrence Malick, Derek Cianfrance, Joe Wright, Robert Redford, Noah Baumbach, The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer and much, much more. And as usual, there is lots of promo material to be found on the festival's website, but our first new look comes from the dudes over at HeyUGuys.

So this morning, Variety spilled the beans on the first wave of announcements for the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, and... boy, it looks like a great year. So much so that we wonder how much is left over for other fall festivals like Venice or Telluride. A few of the most anticipated films won't be world premieres, suggesting that they'll be popping up elsewhere shortly before, but we count 40 films announced so far as world premieres, among them films that are sure to make major waves.

The big push has begun for Rian Johnson's "Looper" in anticipation of its fall release, with the director and cast hitting Comic-Con this weekend to talk up the high concept, sci-fi, time travel assassin film (phew). But lest you think this will be some of kind brainy headscratching, in our interview the director he promised you'll be able to follow along and enjoy the fun. "One of my big priorities in writing the script," the director said, "was to make sure that it didn't feel dense, it didn't feel like homework. I put a lot of shoe leather into going over the script, and making sure the story worked, and ticked, without the sci-fi elements complicating it too much. Making sure the time travel did its job and got out of the way. So hopefully at the end of it, it makes sense, you don't have to think about it too deeply."
