After scoring a surprisingly solid financial return for “Men In Black 3,” Warner Bros. had tapped that film's director Barry Sonnenfeld to helm the Dwayne Johnson-starring graphic novel adaptation “Lore” because hey, why not? After clashing with the studio over the budget, Sonnefeld has dropped out of the director’s chair -- he’ll retain an executive producer credit -- but THR is reporting the studio has already locked up a replacement.

It's a big weekend for names. Steven Soderbergh is back for one last go-round on the theatrical circuit (read our retrospective of his work here). Indiewood favorites of this past fall, John Hawkes and Bill Murray, show up to remind us how fantastic they are (and why they should have gotten Oscar noms). Even Charlie Sheen makes a (rather central) appearance. It's a big weekend for experiments too: surrealism, wuxia, and modern-day Shakespeare are here in full force. And, of course, no theatrical release bundle is complete without the "torture porn" of a middle school game gone adult and awry. So, uh, get ready. And let us know what you'll be seeing in the comments below! (And if you're on the East Coast facing Nemo, stay warm and safe!)

With her beautiful and expressive debut feature film "Somersault," writer/director Cate Shortland established herself as a filmmaker with a sharp sense of the emotional complexities of young women. And now, eight years later, she returns with belated follow-up effort "Lore," another tale of a young woman not only navigating her burgeoning sexuality, but the emotional and moral fallout of post-World War II Germany, all while she battles to keep her family together and alive as power in the country changes hands.

As months on the movie calendar go, February is one of the quieter ones. It doesn't have the Oscar leftovers, or sheer terribleness of January, meanwhile, the hopeful blockbusters of the spring and summer still seem far, far away. But that doesn't mean that there's nothing worth seeing.

If you're a longtime reader of The Playlist, you likely already know that Australian director Cate Shortland is a filmmaker we've kept an eye on. The helmer broke out with "Somersault" in 2004, which featured early, excellent performances from two people you might have heard of: Abbie Cornish and Sam Worthington. And while we had to wait eight long years for her next feature, the filmmaker returned in 2012 with "Lore," a WWII drama, that is more lyrical and evocative that you might expect.

The 56th BFI London Film Festival kicks off October 10th and runs through October 21st. Like any good festival, this means a panoply of new marketing materials, in this case in the form of pictures. First up is a new pic from "Wish You Were Here" featuring Aussie stars Joel Edgerton and Teresa Palmer. Directed by Edgerton's fellow Blue Tongue Films cohort Kieran Darcy-Smith, the film, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year, also co-stars Felicity Price and Antony Starr.

Telluride is wrapped, Venice heads into its final days and TIFF is just about to gear up, but the festival season is far from over. The BFI London Film Festival has dropped their slate this morning and not only is it pulling titles from all those fests, it has nabbed the best of Sundance and Cannes as well for what is a greatest hits package of sorts for cinephiles.
