Stream This: Prince Avalanche, To The Wonder, Magic Magic,
Hey there fellow streamers. The 2013 summer blockbuster season is (mercifully) winding down, and the Oscar rollouts haven't yet begun, leaving us in the typically unpredictable middle ground of autumn. But with video on demand continuing to gain ground as a distribution platform, the streaming services don't seem to have noticed, and keep on delivering cinematic nuggets for us to consume. It's a fairly modern slate this weekend, with two simultaneous theatrical-VOD releases on the American indie side, and a Chilean movie skipping the cinema altogether. Then, we have two relatively recent picks: one from a divisive yet enduring filmmaker and another that focuses on a divisive and enduring issue in US politics. And as another seminal television program moves into its last season, we urge you to (re)watch the follow up episodes to gear up for what is sure to be a spectacular final push. So let's get right to it: the best of streaming for the week.

Lovelace
Not so much a film about Linda Lovelace as a film about a bunch of things that happen to Linda Lovelace, including a destructive marriage to seeming complete, total, bonafide scumbag sonofabitch Chuck Traynor, "Lovelace" is a glossy, starry package featuring loving '70s set design, costuming and narratively crucial hairstyling (more on that later). But, the main question was always around the casting of the leading lady, especially given that the last few years have seen a flurry of names come and go from both this and rival Lovelace project “Inferno” (which famously once boasted Seyfried’s “Mean Girls” co-star Lindsay Lohan). Yes, Lovelace was herself by many accounts a very sweet and warm person, but she was also the first porn superstar, and later on a vocal anti-porn crusader; we knew Seyfried could play the white swan, but could she play the black swan? Actually she probably could have, if she had been given the right script: Seyfried’s performance is the best thing about the film by miles, it’s just a shame there isn’t more to her role.

Hollywood has a dirty secret... Alright, Hollywood has thousands and thousands of dirty secrets, but it has one that's extra-dirty, and extra-secret. It's this: it's not the only movie business in America, or California, or even L.A. Just up the road, there's a whole other system of studios and stars and sound-stages, and Hollywood really, really doesn't like to talk about it.

12 Films You Should See In August
August usually means backpacks, school, and the slow slog to the holidays and the end of the year (can you tell I’m not looking forward to summer‘s end?). One place where the end isn’t apparent is at the local multiplex, where there is so much going in August that I’m throwing in an additional two films for you on top of the requisite ten! Just think, August used to be a dumping ground for films that weren’t bombastic enough for summer but lacked the Oscar clout for the winter; now it’s that special time where independent films can flourish and audiences can remember why they love movies in the first place.

A young woman who discovered sexual pleasure and found a unique place in the world? A naive soul manipulated into performing graphic sexual acts on camera for the gratification of men? Somewhere in between? Linda Lovelace occupies a special place in the pop culture sphere and her story is fascinating and lurid one, and it's coming to the big screen in "Howl" director Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman‘s biopic "Lovelace." After a U.S. trailer last week, a spot from overseas opens up with lots more footage.

Lovelace
Forty years since "Deep Throat" rocked the nation, and Linda Lovelace showed off her particular talent, it's hard to believe that how far we've...uh...come. Blowjobs as a subject are now practically mainstream, and hell, a few errant Google searches can bring you the kind of material in the comfort of your own home that decades ago you could only see in the pervy privacy of your local skinema joint. Whether or not this has been good or bad for culture we'll let a future CNN special discussion decide, but for now, the start of that journey hits the big screen with "Lovelace."

One of the most enticing, if unknown prospects at the Sundance Film Festival (and one we think could spark a distributor bidding war) is "Lovelace" from "Howl" directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. And while there has been a lot of pictures and print about the movie thus far, the first clip has arrived to give a small taste of what's to come.
