Will Smith, Jaden Smith, After Earth
Ah, Earth Day. What was once a moment spent to consider the fate of our planet is now a crass marketing opportunity, and nobody knows that better than Fox. Just a couple years ago, they used the day to help push "Avatar" on home video...the first of a double-dip release, which we're pretty sure isn't so environmentally friendly. And this year, they're showing they care about the planet by reminding you about a Will Smith movie that's coming out.

M. Night Shyamalan Loves 'The Last Picture Show,' Says His Film Taste Is More Antonioni & Kubrick Than You Might Expect

M. Night Shyamalan has had one of the more -- interesting? controversial? -- trajectories of any filmmaker in recent memory. While no one remembers his first two movies ("Wide Awake," "Praying With Anger"), it was 1999's "The Sixth Sense" that made him a sensation, with many calling him the next Alfred Hitchcock or Steven Spielberg. While that hasn't held up, Shyamalan continued to mine the supernatural twist genre to increasingly diminishing returns, wearing out his audience's taste for third act reveals by the time "The Happening" and its sinister trees arrived. Lately, he's dove into full blown tentpole land with the nearly unwatchable "The Last Airbender" and this summer's "After Earth," but is Shyamalan secretly an arthouse filmmaker lost in the blockbuster world?

So this summer, you'll have no shortage of Earth-as-a-barren-wasteland-and-metaphor-for-our-excess movies. Tom Cruise rides motorbikes alone next month in "Oblivion," and not too long after, M. Night Shyamalan delivers "After Earth," which presents the planet as having evolved to kill humans. It turns our there is something scarier than the wind in "The Happening"....

We’ve recently had (sadly false) rumors of a “Twin Peaks” return, and Netflix’s “Hemlock Grove” (trailer here) looks like it has a very "Twin Peaks"-y vibe to accompany those genre elements too, and now Fox has a show that's said to be “evocative of 'Twin Peaks'” from the twistmeister general himself, M. Night Shyamalan. “Wayward Pines” (even the name screams “Twin Peaks”) will apparently be a 10-12 part event series that the network anticipates getting on the air within the next 12-24 months.

Samuel L. Jackson Says M. Night Shyamalan Hasn't Made A Good Movie Since 'Unbreakable'

The last time this writer wrote something even slightly negative about M. Night Shyamalan on this very site – the phrase "diminishing returns" was thrown about if memory serves - it was open season in the comments section. The writer-director certainly still has his passionate fans who don’t need much provocation in order to jump to his defense, but it seems that Samuel L. Jackson isn’t one of them. The actor is known for speaking his mind, and during an interview over at the Huffington Post to promote “Django Unchained” he did just that on a variety of issues, including the career of Shyamalan.

So, did the trailer for "Oblivion" not fill your appetite for futursitic sci-fi in which Earth is no longer as it seems? Well, get comfortable because Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith have teamed up with M. Night Shyamalan for "After Earth" and after this first trailer....we're not quite sure what it's about....

Just when you thought one revisionist take on the classic Herman Melville tale “Moby Dick” wasn’t enough, another project looking to retell the tale has emerged from the depth not unlike its titular character. While “We Need To Talk About Kevin” filmmaker Lynne Ramsay will be taking us to space for "Mobius," her take on “Moby Dick,” it looks like M. Night Shyamalan is set to take another venture to the small screen with his own adventures of Captain Ahab.

It may be hard to recall now, but there was once a time when director M. Night Shyamalan was coined by Time magazine as “The Next Spielberg,” and the fact that almost everything the helmer touched, starting with 1999’s “The Sixth Sense” seemed to turn to gold, he was certainly becoming the go-to poster boy for blockbuster genre filmmaking in the same vein as the bearded one. Now after a storied series of missteps which includes directing films like “The Happening” and “The Last Airbender,” along with a notoriously humorless approach to looking at his own work, much of the goodwill Shyamalan built early in his career has seemed to all but vanish from even some of his most adamant defenders.

M. Night Shyamalan, Will Smith and Jaden Smith couldn't be bothered to wave to fans at Comic-Con, skipping San Diego entirely on Saturday, while Sony forged ahead, trying to get the geek crowd excited about the next summer's blockbuster, "After Earth." The studio showed off mostly behind-the-scenes footage, which included a clip of the director explaining he's approaching his sci-fi blockbuster as if it were "a documentary about Earth’s future." And certainly, the first promo video for the movie lays out the alternate history the movie will be using.

There’s an argument – and it’s an argument that this writer subscribes to – that ever since “The Sixth Sense” each of M. Night Shyamalan’s films has been worse than the one that preceded it. “The Sixth Sense” > “Unbreakable” > “Signs” > “The Village” > “Lady in the Water” > “The Happening” > “The Last Airbender.” You may have a few minor quibbles with that order, but it’s hard to disagree that, broadly, the quality of Shyamalan’s movies have followed a distinctly downward trajectory. So that being said, hands up if you’re excited for “After Earth”!
