Your film stars a who’s who of young, on-the-rise actors who carry brand name recognition within the independent film world: Michael Cera (“Arrested Development”), talented and versatile British actress Juno Temple (“Killer Joe," “Jack And Diane," “The Dark Knight Rises,"“The Three Musketeers,” Emily Browning (“Sucker Punch,” "Sleeping Beauty") and Catalina Sandino Moreno (breakthrough actress and star of “Maria Full of Grace”). Your filmmaker, Sebastián Silva, is the celebrated director behind of 2009’s excellent indie “The Maid” (Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner) , your cinematographer, Christopher Doyle, is well regarded as one of the most excellent DPs on the planet and your film debuts at the prestigious 2013 Sundance Film Festival. So, bearing all those talented riches in mind, your movie goes straight to DVD...why exactly?

Stream This: Prince Avalanche, To The Wonder, Magic Magic,
Hey there fellow streamers. The 2013 summer blockbuster season is (mercifully) winding down, and the Oscar rollouts haven't yet begun, leaving us in the typically unpredictable middle ground of autumn. But with video on demand continuing to gain ground as a distribution platform, the streaming services don't seem to have noticed, and keep on delivering cinematic nuggets for us to consume. It's a fairly modern slate this weekend, with two simultaneous theatrical-VOD releases on the American indie side, and a Chilean movie skipping the cinema altogether. Then, we have two relatively recent picks: one from a divisive yet enduring filmmaker and another that focuses on a divisive and enduring issue in US politics. And as another seminal television program moves into its last season, we urge you to (re)watch the follow up episodes to gear up for what is sure to be a spectacular final push. So let's get right to it: the best of streaming for the week.

Earlier this year at Sundance, Chilean director Sebastian Silva ("The Maid") made a splash with two very different movies. The first, "The Crystal Fairy," was a trippy road comedy that starred Michael Cera and Gabby Hoffman and saw a limited theatrical release this summer from IFC Films (read our review here). The other Silva joint was an equally trippy but far darker film that also co-starred Michael Cera called "Magic Magic," which will be released on DVD this week from Sony. It stars Juno Temple as a young girl who descends into madness while visiting her sister abroad (it involves many sleepless nights, hypnotism, a memorable use of a Knife song and finally some kind of witchcraft). We got to talk to Temple about what it was like working with Silva, what her reference points were for the character, and asked about what she's got coming next—Robert Rodriguez's "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," Alexandre Aja's "Horns," and Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" retelling "Maleficent" (where she plays a tiny fairy).

It premiered at Sundance earlier this year and played at the Directors' Fortnight last month at Cannes, but it seems Sebastian Silva’s “Magic Magic” will not be playing at a theater near you. Instead, it’s going straight to DVD. What’s up with that? Either way, the first official trailer for the psychological thriller has just been posted online, giving you a taste of what the film’s all about.

The Cannes Film Festival is just around the corner and, as usual, clips from some of the prospective films are starting to make their way to the internet. One such film, which is premiering at the Directors’ Fortnight, is “Magic Magic.” Directed by Sebastian Silva (“The Maid”) and starring Michael Cera, Juno Temple, and Emily Browning, the film already made its North American debut at Sundance earlier this year.

The Swimmer Lynne Ramsay
Well, here's one name we didn't expect to figure so prominently at Cannes this year -- Alejandro Jodorowksy. The 84-year-old director will not only have his first feature in over twenty years unveiled, but he will also be the subject of a documentary that is sure to get cinephiles very, very excited.

Aside from a brief appearance in Mark Webber's "The End Of Love," it has been two long years since we've last seen Michael Cera on the big screen. Of course, that was in Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World," and while 2013 will see him once take on the role that made him famous, that of George Michael Bluth in "Arrested Development," he's got two feature projects that will likely shake up his image. He's been hanging out a lot lately with "The Maid" director Sebastian Silva, and they've been productive. The comedy "Crystal Fairy" has already been slotted for the Sundance Film Festival, but now the other one is being called up, the much higher-profile "Magic Magic."

While Michael Cera will return to your computer in his most beloved role as George-Michael Bluth in the next season of "Arrested Development," he's always been eager to break out of that mold. And while "Youth In Revolt" was a (half) attempt to do that, his next effort will certainly find him in different waters. And with a different haircut.

Oh hey, remember just last month when Sony snapped up Sebastian Silva's thriller "Magic Magic" starring Michael Cera, Juno Temple, Emily Browning and Catalina Sandeno Moreno with a spring start in mind? Well, while that one is headed towards cameras later this spring, the "Arrested Development" actor reveals he's already got another movie with "The Maid" director in the can.

So, that moustache. We presume (hope) that Michael Cera is growing that disturbing looking thing for the now currently untitled "Magic Magic" and not for its, uh...fashionability. Either way, we're just glad to hear this project is moving forward, because it sounds promising.
