When he's not spending his newfound retirement from film dropping novella truths on Twitter and promoting “Beyond the Candelabra,” Steven Soderbergh is also lending a hand to Channing Tatum on the sequel to their hit drama “Magic Mike.” Both have obviously cut out questions of a cash-in, and in a recent interview with the director, he's pushed their case further as well as hinted at the film's plot.

We're sure that someone out there has had a better year than Channing Tatum. An Olympian who won multiple gold medals, for instance. Or someone who won nine figures in some kind of lottery. Or maybe the "Gangnam Style" guy. But in the film world, no one's had a better 2012 than Tatum. Somewhat mocked by many in years gone by, the actor kicked off the year by impressing in Steven Soderbergh's "Haywire," before having three $100 million+ smash hits in five months, in the shape of romantic drama "The Vow," acclaimed comedy "21 Jump Street" and Soderbergh's "Magic Mike," which Tatum also produced, and based on his own life. Wildly different films, but Tatum impressed in each, and has gone from a nearly-man to one of the most in-demand leading men around.

Probably the most pleasant surprise of the year so far, both critically and commercially, has been "Magic Mike." We've made no secret of our love of Steven Soderbergh 'round these parts, but we hadn't connected 100% with anything that he'd made since "Che," and when it was first announced, we weren't sure that a male stripping drama starring Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer was going to change that. But not only did the film turn out to be triumph -- a loose, substantial gem with excellent performances all around -- but also a grand commercial hit, bringing in $113 million domestically on a production budget of only $7 million.

So, are we about to see the world's first male stripper franchise? If things go Channing Tatum's way -- and these days, it seems everything is (including being a clue on "Jeopardy!" recently) -- "Magic Mike" will be taking another swing around the cinematic stripper pole.
