Speaking with Entertainment Weekly on the eve of her directorial debut "In the Land of Blood and Honey" hitting home video, Angelina Jolie confirmed that her next feature will be the "Sleeping Beauty" retelling "Maleficent." "The next thing I’m doing is 'Maleficent' for Disney. I start it in June, and it’s a really great script," Jolie told the site. "I’m having a lot of fun. I’ve already got my horns fitted. My kids are very happy."

While Dakota Fanning's most recent big screen effort looks like this, her sister Elle Fanning has been the one with the lucky horseshoe lately. Counting David Fincher, Cameron Crowe, Sofia Coppola, J.J. Abrams and Francis Ford Coppola among the directors she's recently worked with, the actress is now looking to bank time with Angelina Jolie on the set of her next film.

Given her omnipresence in the media, it's easy to forget that Angelina Jolie hasn't actually appeared on screen for eighteen months, since the ill-fated "The Tourist." She's not been idle -- far from it, with voice work in "Kung Fu Panda 2" and her directorial debut "In The Land Of Blood and Honey" landing in 2011. But given that she's one of the few actresses who are able to get a project greenlight solely on their name, her absence from starring roles has surely been felt in certain quarters.

Everyone’s gotta start somewhere. And when you're starting out, you’re cheaper and easier to control, right? The fiscally responsible trends continue in Hollywood: hiring cheap, inexpensive filmmakers to helm tentpole-like pictures. And/or you can look at it in the glass half-full way: studios taking a chance on young, up-and-coming talent. Oh, don’t be so naïve. Kidding… sort of.

Levy Considering A Frankenstein Flick & 'Maleficent' In case "At The Mountains Of Madness," "The Dark Tower" and "The Lone Ranger" haven't tipped you off, these days studios are more wary than ever about the coin they spend. It's an irony considering that only tent-pole fare seems to get greenlit these days, but even then, expensive, costly gambles like "Cowboys & Aliens" are projects no movie executive can afford to make. Which brings us to "Fantastic Voyage." Produced by James Cameron, and set to be in 3D, the hot project found a number of directors circling or involved at various points including Paul Greengrass, Tarsem, Darren Aronofsky, Jonathan Mostow, Timur Bekmambetov and Louis Leterrier, before Shawn Levy signed on in February. But it seems the director and Fox are at odds over how to proceed with the production.

Guillermo del Toro might be distinguishable to many for his rotund physique, but he’s better known these days, production-wise at least, for stretching himself too thin. Since his last film -- 2008’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” -- he famously hotfooted it from “The Hobbit” over a year ago, citing production delays even before MGM declared bankruptcy, though he’s yet to get started on a new project, even as Peter Jackson’s two-part epic began production earlier in the year. Conventional logic would dictate that del Toro’s long overdue for getting a Spanish-language “one for me” out of his system along the lines of “The Devil’s Backbone” and “Pan’s Labyrinth”, but he tells The LA Times he’d seriously consider taking on Disney’s revisionist fairy tale “Maleficent” that’s been shopped around since 2009, usually with Angelina Jolie in consideration for the lead role, if the studio asked him. “Let me put it this way, if they ask I’ll take the meeting”, del Toro assures us. Wait, what? Aren’t you meant to be getting ready to make “Pacific Rim”?

Also Circling Disney's 'Maleficient'; Director Confirms He's Been Talking To Angelina Jolie, Plus Robert De Niro For 'The Silver Linings Playbook'Update: Ahh, so this is the one of the "several projects" that David O. Russell was talking to Angelina Jolie about. According to THR, now that Tim Burton has dropped the project, "The Fighter" filmmaker is one of the director's "circling" the Sleeping Beauty project "Maleficient." Russell never met a meeting he didn't like, so we're sure he's interested, but knowing his creative differences with studios, we would bet this one is not going to stick.

After spending a decade scraping together financing on his films (only working with a major studio once on his passion project "The Fountain"), it seems like suddenly everybody wants to be in the Darren Aronofsky business. We guess that happens when your $13 million-budgeted ballet thriller goes on to make over $100 million dollars and wins an Oscar for its leading lady, despite, as the director has noted, every major studio passing on the film and financing being raised independently. Fox thought they'd get first crack at some of that Aronofsky "edge" giving him a 2-year development deal and hiring him to take on "The Wolverine," a standalone tale that was to take place largely in Japan and repair the damage caused by 2009's franchise killer "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Unfortunately for them (and fans of the character), Aronofsky dropped out of the project shortly before filming when he realized he would be away from his family for nearly a year.
