It may seem a bit weird that Jessica Chastain is doing what appears to be a pretty low-rent horror movie, but we'd reckon it's another way to get an auteur notched on her belt that already includes names like Terrence Malick, Jeff Nichols, Kathryn Bigelow, John Hillcoat and more. Guillermo del Toro is the producer behind "Mama," which finds Chastain replacing her fiery red locks for a black-haired goth look, and before you see the movie, you can now check out the short that got the ball rolling.

So, Jessica Chastain dyeing her dazzing red locks black? Yeah, we're gonna have to get used to that, but it's all part of the goth look she's put together for the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror "Mama." And the first trailer is here to send a tingle up your spine.

If short filmmakers have a best case scenario in their minds when they set out to make something, then director Andres Muschietti may have just achieved it. After premiering his short film, “Mama,” to near-unanimous praise during festivals the past few years, the young filmmaker was chosen by Guillermo del Toro to develop the film into a feature, and soon after actress Jessica Chastain came aboard as well. Essentially reward upon reward for Muschietti, and we now get a nice glimpse ourselves as the first still from the project has hit the net.

Only a few years ago, it seemed that you'd only get blockbuster releases between May and July, and clustered around Thanksgiving and Christmas (for more family oriented fare, at least). But any kind of release calendar ghettoization has long since fallen apart: March is now one of the key dates in the release calendar, and almost every month of the year sees at least one studio put out a hugely expensive blockbuster. 2013 looks to be the most unrelenting year yet, from the release of "Gangster Squad" on January 11th through to the second "The Hobbit" at the end of the year, almost every week has a giant film on release. And one of the larger gaps on the calendar seems to have been filled.

It feels like Jessica Chastain is a name that we've been hearing about for years now, without much evidence to go by in terms of released movies. But now that we've seen her in a leading role in Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life," we understand why she's such a hot property: she's a terrific, luminous actress. And 2011 will continue to be a massive year for her, as she has another seven films on the way: playing the young Helen Mirren in "The Debt"; starring in the acclaimed Sundance drama "Take Shelter"; popping up Ralph Fiennes' "Coriolanus," teaming with Al Pacino in "Wilde Salome," featuring alongside Emma Stone in "The Help," taking a part in John Hillcoat's "The Wettest County In The World," and appearing with Sam Worthington and Chloe Moretz in cop drama "Texas Killing Fields." Whew. As for 2012, she's got a small role in Malick's next picture (presuming it comes out next year), and she's just signed on to something that sounds very different, a film with a rising Spanish director, and produced by one of the biggest names in the genre world.
