Map To The Stars
Yesterday, we got our first taste of David Cronenberg's "Maps To The Stars," with what was essentially a post-production reel. And is generally the case, that kind of footage isn't always the best representation of the tone and style of the finished product. Well, this morning brings with it another look at Cronenberg's film with another trailer, one boasting lots of new footage and a distinctly different vibe.

Maps To The Stars
David Cronenberg is back, and this time he's taking on his most terrifying, mind-altering subject yet: Hollywood families. Yep, the filmmaker who has spent a career shaking us up with various types of body horror, is continuing his exploration into the psyche, following up the Freudian "A Dangerous Method," and the chatty "Cosmopolis" with "Maps To The Stars."

Maps To The Stars
Next week, the Cannes Film Festival will unveil their slate for 2014, and one movie you can put good money on being there is David Cronenberg's "Maps To The Stars." The director continues his run of psychological dramas/thrillers with another change in direction, one that moves away from the more traditional (for Cronenberg) "A Dangerous Method" and the contained "Cosmopolis," while reuniting him with his new muse, Robert Pattinson.

With Jane Campion named as the jury president for 67th Cannes Film Festival earlier this week, so begins the forward look to the events on the Croisette in May. While the lineup is still a long way off from begin announced, if we were betting men, we'd put a good wager on David Cronenberg's "Maps To The Stars" being part of the official lineup. And now there's an indication that a cut of the movie is finished.

Now that's he's through dissing Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," David Cronenberg can get back to finishing up "Maps To The Stars" for a rumored premiere next spring at the Cannes Film Festival. But until then, some new images from the flick have landed online, giving a closer look at his upcoming satire.

The Shining David Cronenberg
For whatever reason, Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" has been a bit more scrutinized than usual in 2013. The documentary "Room 237" dredged up all sorts of fanciful, conspiratorial theories about the director's supposedly "true" intentions behind the film, while Stephen King—promoting his novel sequel to his horror classic "Doctor Sleep"—took another swipe at the 1980 adaptation, calling it "misogynistic" among other things. And now, David Cronenberg has weighed in with his thoughts on Kubrick's chiller, and you might be surprised to learn he's not a fan.

We know, looking ahead to 2014 when there is still so much to come in 2013 is a bit silly, but a handful of new images are here and we figured we might as well show 'em off all in one place. So without further delay ...

After spending a couple of years in the last decade making well-received, more traditionally made dramas, David Cronenberg delved back into the weird last year with “Cosmopolis.” Now, production has begun next film, “Maps to the Stars,” which sounds like it could be a combination of both styles. The film stars John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson, Olivia Williams, and Sarah Gadon. Until now, not much has been known about the film except that it would take on Hollywood and celebrity culture while also doubling as some kind of ghost story, but now a much clearer picture is emerging.

His films may be freaky and funky and may not appeal to the average Joe Moviegoer, but stars line up to work with David Cronenberg. Simply, with unique stories usually married with inventive visuals, the filmmaker makes the kinds of movies few get the chance to do in Hollywood and so it comes as no surprise that his upcoming "Maps To The Stars" is lining up talent left and right.

We have to admit, we were kinda worried. Last month, Rachel Weisz dropped out of David Cronenberg's brewing "Maps To The Stars," the project that would reteam him with his "Cosmopolis" lead Robert Pattinson. The plan was to shoot the movie next month, but with Cronenberg recently taking a role in "I Am Love" helmer Luca Guadagnino's adaptation of Don DeLillo's novel "The Body Artist," lensing this summer, we wondered about the status of 'Maps.' Turns out, we have nothing to worry about.
