It is, we're told, Tolkien Week. We're not sure entirely what that means, except that it's presumably something like Shark Week, but with elves. But in movie publicity terms, it means a big push from Warner Bros. for their upcoming "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," a two-part hastily cobbled-together trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's first excursion to Middle Earth, which serves as a prequel to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

"I cannot guarantee his safety, nor will I be responsible for his fate," Richard Armitage's Thorin Oakenshield says to Ian McKellen's Gandalf The Grey about Martin Freeman's diminutive Bilbo Baggins in the latest trailer for Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." Hey, I have a great idea, let's bring a small hobbit on a perilous journey that he may not survive!

While the decision is yet to come down on whether or Warner Bros. and Peter Jackson will embark on additional shooting to create "The Hobbit: Cashing In" aka a third movie in the upcoming series of the films (we hope the director reads our open letter), they haven't kept their eyes off the prize in marketing the first movie, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

To say the Comic-Con crowd is a little excited about the long-awaited release of the first “The Hobbit” movie this holiday season would be the understatement of the century. Saturday morning’s Hall H line was quite possibly the longest in the convention’s history, which could be attributed partially to other big guns such as “Django Unchained” and “Man of Steel,” but it’s hard to imagine the legendarily loyal Tolkien faithful didn’t play the biggest part in the mob scene.

With this week’s release of “The Amazing Spider-Man” -- and "The Dark Knight Rises" just around the corner -- we’re at the halfway point of the summer blockbuster season. But there will be big spectacles to come right through to the end of the year, including Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”

2012 is undoubtedly the year of the mega-franchise. With "The Amazing Spider-Man," "The Dark Knight Rises" "Twilight: Breakin Dawn Part Two" and "Ice Age: Continental Drift," several of the biggest movies of all time (yes, "Ice Age 3" made nearly a billion dollars...) are seeing follow-ups hit theaters, so much so that Marvel have been forced to combine all their franchises into "The Avengers" just to compete. But few of these films are as eagerly anticipated as "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

Well, it screened recently at AICN's "Butt-Numb-A-Thon" -- an annual 72 hour non-stop screening of genre-minded films, plus some early sneak peeks from the new year -- and it was rumored to appear this weekend in front of Warner Bros' "Sherlock Holmes: Game Of Shadows," and that's likely the case, as here it is: the first teaser trailer for Peter Jackson's long-time-coming "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" has finally arrived (almost an ironically fitting title since Guillermo del Toro was originall supposed to direct the film).

While the Steven Spielberg-directed “The Adventures of Tintin” finally reaches theaters stateside this week, it will also bring along a lovely gift for fans of that film’s executive producer and “Lord of the Rings” trilogy mastermind Peter Jackson. As we told you back in November, the trailer for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is set to play in front of the much anticipated Spielberg blockbuster, but for fans eager to get another early taste of Jackson’s return to Middle Earth, a new image may provide you with the sort of sneak peek you’ve been waiting for.

Review: 'Swinging With The Finkels' A Conservative Sex Comedy With Less Laughs Than That Implies

There’s no way around this, there’s no kind way to preface this, there’s no purpose to side-step it: “Swinging With The Finkels” is one of the worst, cheapest, dumbest and most dishonest films of the year. The film has the same tin-ear for its material that student films usually sport, often when they’re about retirement, hitmen, or a litany of subjects young people tackle despite clearly having no experience in the field. 'Swinging,' in theory, would be a film oblivious to the matters of sex and intimacy, but, in fact, it’s merely alien to any and all human behavior. The only 2011 film with this level of understanding regarding our basic humanity was Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch,” but at least that picture has the fallback of a heightened science fiction story.
