'Ant-Man' For 2014? If It Works With Edgar Wright's Schedule, Maybe...

Despite the semi-confusion at Comic-Con this weekend, Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man" was officially announced as a Marvel film. Or at least, for a good 30-40 minutes after Marvel's presentation of Wright's well-received "Ant-Man" test-footage, no one in the audience, journalists included, could agree whether the film had been officially announced or not. Marvel Studio's website cleared that up with an official movie logo. The commotion, in part, was perhaps because unlike all the other titles officially announced, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Guardians Of The Galaxy," etc., "Ant-Man" had not received a release date and still doesn't have one.

For a major studio who do nothing but make blockbuster tentpole movies, Marvel do, to their credit, take their fare share of risks. Casting Robert Downey Jr, an actor coming out of a decade or so of drug and alcohol addiction, and whose last film as a lead, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" made under $5 million at the box office, as the lead in "Iron Man" was certainly a risk, but one that paid off handsomely.

Well, Comic-Con is done for another year. The San Diego Conference Center is currently getting a thorough hosing down, hungover cos-players have done their awkward walks of shame, and film press are returning to their various corners of the world longing, like ourselves, to watch and write about something difficult, European and subtitled.

Phase One of Marvel's comic book movie plan was one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken. After the success of "Iron Man," the comics company-turned-film studio, who had started financing their own movies, started putting together a four-year-plan that would see an "Iron Man" sequel, as well as introductions to "Thor" and "Captain America," that would lead into team-up movie "The Avengers." And boy did it pay off. All the films were hits individually, before "The Avengers" became a phenomenon this spring, taking nearly $1.5 billion worldwide to date, making it the third-biggest-grossing film of all time.

A brief litle update on various bits and bobs from San Diego over the weekend so here we go...The last time we heard anything about the future of Marvel's "The Punisher" was last fall when Fox committed to a TV pilot that would bring the character to the small screen...and that's about it since then. But Thomas Jane, who played the character in the modestly received 2004 movie, has gone ahead and made his own short film without Marvel approval.

Marvel Studios, and in particular the “Iron Man” franchise, have a long and storied history with Comic-Con and Hall H. Nearly all of their films have had a presence at the show, oftentimes debuting footage shot only days before the convention. “Captain America” famously debuted an impressively polished reel two years ago after only one week of shooting.

It was a clever ruse. While Marvel Studios planned for its late day panel of "Iron Man 3," British filmmaker Edgar Wright tweeted away the morning as if he was in London, England, even referencing San Diego's Comic-Con. But in a not-so-surprise move this evening (the cat was out of the bag earlier in the day), Wright joined Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, ahead of the "Iron Man 3" panel to show off recent test-footage shot for "Ant-Man."

When you direct and rewrite one of the biggest films of all time, and are often considered the architect of said feature for pulling off the various and disparate movie threads that lead to that complex feat, everyone wants to know what you're going to do for an encore.

Comic-Con officially begins today, but Fox, who've been a frequent presence at the event in past years (including stealing the show in 2011 with the first footage from "Prometheus"), are more or less absent, other than a separate panel for their 2013 summer hope "After Earth." More than anything else, it's simply because they don't have anything relevant to show; the long-delayed "The Wolverine" is only getting underway in the next few weeks, and "X-Men: First Class 2" won't shoot until early next year.
