While ever hopeful geeks crossed their fingers that "Ant-Man" could be shot in time for a 2014 release, possibly with lensing to begin once "Thor 2" wrapped, that won't be the case. But the good news is that the film does have a release date, so let three years of speculation begin.

Despite the fact that “The Avengers 2” doesn’t even have a script and that Marvel hasn’t completely nailed down their Phase 2 plans yet, there are already rumors about the new characters that would appear in the film, and even about who will play them. So grab some salt and take a seat while we talk about stuff that’s not even close to happening.

Earlier this summer, we at The Playlist launched our Playlist podcast series. In our second episode, we conversed about Warner Bros.' plans for the Justice League, and of course, discussed the second phase of the Marvel cinematic universe. During our conversation we dropped some fun Marvel rumors that had come across our desk this summer (Marvel never verifies, so it tends to be speculative at best) and one of the more fascinating grapevine dispatches we heard was that Dr. Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel universe, would be a big part of "Thor: The Dark World" (then simply called "Thor 2").

With many budgets routinely crossing the $150 million threshold, studios keep a close eye on their tentpoles, making sure the films hit that four-quadrant sweet spot with nothing, not a blemish, to stop them. Every once in awhile, however, certain details are overlooked and the detail in the case of Marvel’s blockbuster team-up film “The Avengers” will block the release of the Blu-ray box set of Phase One of their cinematic universe.

Anyone with even a modicum of interest in putting comic books to film in a true and worthwhile way probably has breathed a few sighs of relief over the past few weeks. First, when “The Avengers” mastermind Joss Whedon was announced as taking the director’s seat on that film’s sequel, then when he was pretty much anointed the king of Marveland as they put the post-“The Avengers” film and television landscape in his hands, and then finally just this past week it was announced Whedon would be heading up a series for ABC based on the high-flying “S.H.I.E.L.D.” organization. So yeah, it’s a pretty good time to see the panels of your favorite comic come to life.

Marvel is wasting no time getting their next big film property, an adaptation of the comic book series, "Guardians Of The Galaxy," off the ground. After a lengthy search, James Gunn has apparently taken the pole position slot as the primary contender to take the director's chair for this tale of interstellar heroes who proactively protect the galaxy.

The writing was on the wall. With David Slade leaving the project earlier this summer, and Joe Carnahan revealing yesterday that his pitch for a "'Serpico' styled" take on "Daredevil" "went up in smoke," it wasn't exactly clear how Fox was going to hang on to the rights to the character with an October 10th deadline looming. And it looks like they won't.

“We’re in preproduction on a movie called ’Iron Man 3’ right now. We've got a great director called Shane Black who's taking the reins. It’s the first of what we refer to Phase Two of this Avengers Assemble talk, which will lead to an ‘Avengers 2.’ Those movies will be a part of that,” Kevin Feige said at the New York Comic-Con last fall. But a lot has changed since then, most importantly, the billion dollar success of "The Avengers," which basically no one saw coming. It was a game-changer not only at the box office, but critically with the Marvel movie earning some of the best notices of any picture they've done. But it also proved the value of a writer/director making the most of the opportunity to flex their muscle within the Marvel universe, and deliver the kind of results that pleased both hardcore fanboys and general audiences alike. And Marvel, wisely, want to continue to do that.
