The film rights to Marvel comic-book characters in the universe of Hollywood is, as Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige put it in an interview with HeyUGuys, "pretty cut and dry." 20th Century Fox owns The X-Men and the X-men mutant universe, Dardevil and his world and The Fantastic Four and that comic book's millieu. Columbia/Sony owns Spider-Man and Ghost-Rider and for the most part Marvel Studios owns everything else ("The Avengers" and all the characters within are obviously their biggest brand).

The first scene of " The Avengers" is not very good. Deep in a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. base, scientist Eric Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) is conducting experiments on The Tesseract, the blue cube that powered the Red Skull's experiments in "Captain America." Expriments that, unfortunately, bring to earth Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the vengeful brother of Thor (Chris Hemsworth), last seen plummeting from Asgard into oblivion. Loki manages to take down S.H.I.E.L.D's best -- Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) -- with ease, and soon the base is decimated. It's a perfectly acceptable place to start, but there's something off about the execution: it's stilted, awkward and humorless, and the action is pretty uninvolving, with a TV-level of scope.

Mark Ruffalo probably isn’t the actor most fans expected to see play Bruce Banner (aka The Incredible Hulk). But then again, were Ed Norton, Eric Bana and Bill Bixby really the predictable choices at the time? Once Ruffalo accepted the part and came aboard the cast of the star-studded “Avengers,” he had to hold up the usual fanboy onslaught, much of it the same kinds of relatively baseless criticisms his own cast mates Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. faced when they were first cast as superheroes. It’s an impossible set of expectations to live up to.

Update: According to our Jeff Otto on the ground at "The Avengers" press conference Mark Ruffalo has also confirmed they are shooting an extra scene. "We’re shooting a scene tonight. I’m not sure exactly where it’s gonna go. All I know is that someone came in with the costume and said, 'Here’s some wardrobe. We don’t know where you’re going to be or what you’re doing.' " Ruffalo said. We asked if it will be in the "The Avengers" when it hits theaters Ruffalo added, "Yeah. So I’m like, 'All right, when are we doing that?' Today after we’re done.”

With Marvel now moving in earnest to find a director for the expected sequel to "Captain America: The First Avenger" they have gone ahead and announced a release date -- April 4, 2014.

Guessing who Marvel are going to pick to direct their movies is increasingly becoming a fool's errand. We could see why Jon Favreau and Louis Leterrier were picked to helm "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk." But since that opening salvo, they've mostly shied away from A-list names and those experienced with action, with names like Kenneth Branagh, Joss Whedon and Shane Black being picked out to helm "Thor," "The Avengers" and "Iron Man 3."

Last summer saw a fairly major clash of the superheroes, with four movies featuring men in tights battling it out for box office supremacy. Marvel's duo of "Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger" won out over "X-Men First Class" and "Green Lantern," but as it turns out, it was all just a warm up for this summer's main event. July will see follow ups to the two biggest superhero movies in history arrive in the shape of "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises," but they won't have it all to themselves, as May doesn't just bring Thor and Captain America back, but also Iron Man, The Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury, for Joss Whedon's "The Avengers."

With February coming to a close, the first superhero mega-blockbuster of the year, Marvel's team-up extravaganza "The Avengers," is getting awfully near; the movie will kick off the summer movie season in early May. As such, the final wave of marketing is getting underway, with a final trailer set to arrive in just under twenty-four hours. And as has become tradition, that trailer's been preceded with a new poster, along with a little international sk[r]ullduggery to go with it.

Coming from the grimier, gonzo world of "Crank," it was something of a surprise to see directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor take the helm of Sony blockbuster "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance." While the first film was a $228 million hit, Sony definitely wanted to take this prospective franchise in a different direction. And fortunately for the hands-on duo, who also shoot all their second unit footage themselves, they were given free reign by Marvel Studios to put their stamp on the film.

You may have forgotten, but Marvel was always planning on taking a couple more dollars out of your Iron Man wallet by converting "The Avengers" to 3D. Today that plan seems even more official, as "The Avengers" shall forth be known as "The Avengers 3D." The movie is already looking busy with Thor, Tony Stark, Hawkeye, Captain America, Loki, Pepper Potts, Bruce Banner, Phil Coulson and Nick Fury all running around doing stuff, so we're not we need this thing in some hastily coverted 3D to further fry our eyeballs, but to quote David Fincher, to each his own.
