Transformer: Age of Extinction
Still no sign of J.C. Chandor's "A Most Violent Year" on the fall festival slate, but while we wait to see where the film pops up (*cough* Telluride *cough*), the director is keeping busy with the lineup for his next, "Deepwater Horizon," landing none other than Mark Wahlberg for the lead role. The movie is based on a true story and will find the actor playing the "No. 2 manager on the doomed oil rig" in the movie that "revisits the acts of heroism that followed in trying to rescue men in the water, stories not known to the general public." Production starts next year.

Agents Of 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' Season 2
Comic-Con, as you probably already know, is underway this weekend, and the abundance of teases, treats and hyperbole coming out of San Diego may render it hard to keep up. But what's easy for anyone to grasp is the fact that every other studio at the Con is playing catch-up to Marvel, the undisputed king of teases, treats and hyperbole. The comic company/studio has demonstrated its domination of the multiplex, and is now expanding its increasingly imitated world-building techniques into television. This allows the studio to introduce more characters from the comics into what may yet have to be re-dubbed "the Marvel Cinematic/Televised Universe," and season two of "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." looks to do just that.

Captain America: The First Avenger, Peggy Carter
The curious thing about the Marvel-verse is that the more it expands, the more strings need to be tied together to keep it all connected. And one strand that Marvel is continually threading belongs to Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter. First featured in "Captain America: The First Avenger," she returned in old-age makeup for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." And now the actress confirms she'll once again make a Marvel movie appearance, this time in "The Avengers: Age Of Ultron." And she can credit alcohol for helping make that happen.

That's a big step up for the second adventure to topline Chris Evans' super-soldier Steve Rogers to date, no doubt helped by very positive reaction from fans and critics alike.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
This weekend, the only film opening in wide release stateside is "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Why are the other studios staying away? X-Men: Days Of Future Past
Though the its cinematic universe in divided into three — “Spider-Man” is with Sony, the “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four” characters with Fox, and the rest with the comics giant itself — Marvel is still far ahead of the competition with each of its futures more or less for the next several years. In fact, with “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” the company hopes to slowly introduce more obscure characters from their catalogue to general audiences with the expense of a large blockbuster. In fact, yesterday came news that the middling ABC series will be adding two characters absent from the Marvel cinematic universe up until now.

It has been six years since we've had anything on any screen from the mind of Charlie Kaufman. It was 2008 when he delivered "Synecdoche, New York" and since then, while the promise of this Hollywood satire/musical "Frank Or Francis" has been teased, it has yet to find the momentum or money/support to get made. But once again, television is giving someone of Kaufman's unique talent a place to flourish. Last spring came word that over at FX, Kaufman was writing a TV series called "How And Why," but there were few other details. But today, not only does it have stars but we now know a little of what it's all about.

If you're wondering why the comic book stores are empty tonight, it's because fans across the nation will be tuned in to watch the series premiere of "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." The comic studio is trying their lucky with a weekly format, taking the beloved Agent Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, and making him the center of the action. But one the sticking point for many will be: didn't he die in "The Avengers"? Wasn't that the crucial motivation in getting the team to work together to defeat Loki? While the answer to both those questions is "yes," it's now moot as the character lives, but you won't believe how it's being explained away.

As word of a brand new, "Harry Potter"-inspired film series dropped this morning, it's reminder that studios are continuing to seek ways to build on existing properties, because you make your money investing in stuff people already know, instead of trying to launch something new. And so we come to "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." which sees the Marvel-verse expanding on the small screen, and with the show to kick off in a just a couple weeks, some new peeks have arrived.
