5 Versions of Superman feature
This weekend, "Man of Steel" finally takes flight. An ambitious, massively expensive project devised by "The Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan (serving in a story writer/producer role), writer David S. Goyer, and directed by "Watchmen" filmmaker Zack Snyder, the film, while flawed, is an epic rejuvenation of the Superman mythos, encapsulating everything from the destruction of Krypton to the very human feelings of isolation and dread on Earth (you can read our non-spoilery review here).

Before J.C. Chandor could fully soak in the experience of premiering his sophomore feature “All is Lost” at Cannes this week -- which was met with rapturous praise (read our review here) -- he had already lined up his next project, and it's slated to shoot later this year. His third feature, A Most Violent Year,” is planning to cast a bunch of big names, but none of them have been revealed as of yet. Given the buzz for 'Lost,' however, names may not be so difficult to come by. Plot details are being kept under wraps but considering how well he handled an ensemble cast with his debut film, “Margin Call,” it should be fun to see him working with another top notch cast. Ah, McG. Just mention of the name alone is enough to get the vitriol pumping through the veins of Internet movie nerds. The early dislike for the director hasn’t dissipated in recent years after first disappointing the fanboys of one movie franchise with “Terminator Salvation” (although personally we’d have loved to see his much darker ending make the final cut) then returning last year and squandering a fantastic cast (Pine! Hardy! Witherspoon!) on the way to delivering a woefully inept comedy with “This Means War.” Next up for the director on the big screen is the Luc Besson-produced thriller “Three Days to Kill” (currently set to star Kevin Costner, Amber Heard, Hailee Steinfeld and Connie Nielsen), but it also looks like he has plans for a project on the small screen.

McG is like a classic timex watch. He takes a lickin', but keeps on tickin'. "This Means War" was routinely included in Worst Of 2012 lists (including ours), "Terminator Salvation" took a beating in 2009, and the rest of his career hasn't fared much better outside of the kinetic, high-level octane of "Charlie's Angels" that critics were soon complaining about in its sequel. But not everyone makes films for critics, obviously. His upcoming film, an untitled thriller produced by Luc Besson that stars Kevin Costner, just got a bump from its newly announced cast.

Perennially cast as the eye candy or love interest in B-action movies like “Never Back Down” and “Drive Angry,” Amber Heard is set to take her talents to a much higher profile project. Variety is reporting that the “All The Boys Love Mandy Lane” actress is joining the McG-helmed “Three Days to Kill” opposite Kevin Costner.

Plucked from obscurity by the Coen Brothers for "True Grit," Hailee Steinfeld turned in a commanding performance that earned her an Oscar nomination, and since then her career has experienced a rocket's ascent. The actress has been busy lining up movie after movie, taking on a diverse array of projects: the music world drama "Can A Song Save Your Life?"; Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet"; literary adaptation "Hateship, Friendship"; and sci-fi blockbuster "Ender's Game." And now, for better or worse, she's getting a taste of McG.

McG. The three letters which strike fear into the heart of any cinephile, and mediocrity into any given movie project. And yet, the helmer keeps getting gigs, most recently assigned to direct an untitled thriller for Luc Besson, with Kevin Costner to star. And now he's gonna make some magic. Sort of.

Mentioned as possibilities earlier this month, it looks like the deals went through. McG ("Terminator Salvation") will direct the Luc Besson-produced and co-written thriller previously known as "Three Days To Kill." Now untitled, according to Relativity Media, as suggested, Kevin Costner will star as a dying assassin who wants to reconcile with his daughter while embarking on his final mission.

Deadline is exclusively reporting news out of Toronto that the once-and-future Captain America Chris Evans and supremely underutilized Michelle Monaghan will co-star in "A Many Splintered Thing," for McG's Wonderland Sound & Vision and Voltage Pictures. Described in the report as "in the vein of 'Amelie' and '(500) Days of Summer'" (Manic Pixie Dream Girls, activate!), a self-described "anti-romantic comedy." The film will mark Evans' first outing as an executive producer.

Is Kevin Costner ready for a multiplex comeback? At one time, the actor was a big star, who could carry both drama and comedy to big box office success. The late '80s and early '90s in particular saw him handle an incredible run of films that included "The Untouchables," "Field Of Dreams," "Bull Durham," "Dances With Wolves," "Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves" and "JFK." And while he hasn't had that kind of success in quite some time, the massive critical and popular approval of the miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys" (22 Emmy nominations) along with a role in the upcoming "Man Of Steel" could mean a comeback is around the corner.
