If you were too busy last night watching "Game Of Thrones" and "Mad Men," you likely missed the onslaught of teasers and clips from the MTV Movie Awards. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Man Of Steel," "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Iron Man 3" were all out in force, but not everything previewed was a special effects blockbuster.

Rex Reed and critics be damned, because audiences are loving Melissa McCarthy. “Identity Thief,” her first major leading role following her Oscar-nominated breakout success in “Bridesmaids,” is massive hit, already earning over $115 million and counting. And it’s probably a safe bet that her summer comedy “The Heat,” with Sandra Bullock, will generate as many bucks if not even more. So what's potentially next on her slate? How about a movie with Bill Murray?

So, a couple of things happened over the weekend. A major snowstorm nailed the east coast of the country, "Identity Thief" opened to huge numbers making it the best R-rated comedy bow of all time, and the largely irrelevant and already cantankerous Rex Reed penned a scathing review of the movie. Not just scathing, but also bizarrely personal, the critic took dead aim at Melissa McCarthy calling the actress "tractor-sized," "humongous," "female hippo" and "a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success." As FilmDrunk noted near the end of last year, the critic has an Armond White-esque tendency to say outrageous things, but this seemed to well over the line, and the internet and media responded swiftly to denounce Reed. Well, you can't keep a cranky, seventy-four year old critic down.

Schedule management is underrated. Your studio might have a film that screams “hit,” you might market the picture like a genius, and you might have the hottest actor in the world. But sometimes, films are filling a void left empty for casual audience goers, and the demand is pent-up not for a specific film, but rather a specific type of film. In this case, we’re talking about “Identity Thief,” now in line to score the year’s biggest three-day opening with $36 million, making it the best R-rated comedy opening ever in February.

While the mild-mannered Jason Bateman and the zaftig Melissa McCarthy may not be the likeliest of Hollywood hotshots, they are about to release the highest-profile comedy of the year so far with “Identity Thief” this Friday, and the two have capitalized on the film’s buzz by announcing their respective exciting next ventures.

When studios screen comedies for critics, there is typically an audience there, no matter how far in advance the screening. The reason, of course, is that an audience responding to a comedy in a positive way has a kind of transformative power – laughing and having fun with your fellow moviegoers is something that you actively want to engage in. And it is a good barometer for whether or not the movie will be a success – when we saw "Ted" last summer, we weren't too crazy about it, but the audience went ape shit. (This translated to one of the biggest R-rated comedies ever.) At a recent screening of "Identity Thief," the new high-concept road movie from Universal, a packed audience responded politely but not enthusiastically.

With a gig on the CBS sitcom "Mike & Molly" limiting her schedule for making movies, Melissa McCarthy is still looking to tap into the praise and buzz she earned for "Bridesmaids." Her stint in Judd Apatow's "This Is 40" is more or less a cameo (albeit a great one -- the outtakes of the principal's office scene over the credits were funnier than half the movie) but within six months, audiences are going to be getting a double dose of the comedienne in lead roles. Next month she'll make Jason Bateman's life a living hell in "Identity Thief," and then a few months after that Sandra Bullock will play the straight man alongside McCarthy in "The Heat."

In the span of about five months, audiences are going to see Melissa McCarthy, no holds barred, in three different films: starting this weekend in a memorable appearance in Judd Apatow's "This Is 40," in February in the road trip throwdown "Identity Thief" with Jason Bateman and then in the spring with Sandra Bullock in "The Heat." Is it too much?

As folks will soon see during the end credits of "This Is 40," Melissa McCarthy is an improv machine. “I've seen people in tears before, but that was something otherworldly. People were leaving the room -- crew had to leave. It was impossible, and she just kept her composure through all of it,” Paul Rudd said about working with her on Judd Apatow's film, with the director adding, quite simply: "...Melissa is one of the best improvisers there is." And hopefully Seth Gordon knew enough to let her go off script, but even if not, the new trailer for "Identity Thief" does have some promise.

What happens when a fussy, by-the-books FBI agent teams up with a street-wise, rule-bending Boston cop? Hilarity, we suppose, but you can see for yourself as the first trailer for "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig's "The Heat" is here.
