If you've read our recent feature on Blockbuster Threequels (and if you haven't, you should), you might have noticed that the third entry in many franchises was not the last. They continued on past that number, as the market dictated, and now enough people paid for "Men In Black 3" that we might get another one.

With "The Bourne Legacy" and "The Expendables 2" landing over the last couple of weekends, we're pretty much at the tail end of the tentpole-laden summer movie season. The rest of the month finds classic late-August programmers like "Premium Rush," "The Apparition" and "The Possession" hitting theaters before attention will be turned to the fall festival season with Venice, Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF all on the way.

So how confident were Sony that "21 Jump Street" had the potential to be a hit? A month before the movie came to theaters, Jonah Hill revealed a sequel was already in the works, and a few weeks later it was reported that he was teaming up with Michael Bacall to pen the followup. And while it hasn't been formally announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller will return to direct, it's likely we'll know more soon if everything goes according to plan.

There’s always an audience out there. You just have to serve it. And so it goes with the past three days, the second straight strong weekend of this summer that suggests business is rebounding from a tepid 2011. “Madagascar 3D: Europe’s Most Wanted” took the crown in a fashion similar to the first two films in this series, because it is a CG-animated kids film with talking animals, and you have to purposely run a terrible ad campaign to not make money in that racket. It's been awhile since kids and parents have seen a CG-toon with a heavy marketing presence -- you probably could have released “Rio 5” in this atmosphere and it would have killed.

Maybe that sequel will happen after all. Very clever, Universal. First, you announce that "Snow White and the Huntsman" is tracking a bit weak, possibly in the low 30s. Then, there's a "leak" that you've backtracked on a sequel since getting David Koepp to pen a follow-up. And now, with reports that 'Huntsman' may have actually connected with the young males they were trying to entice, registering a $55 million opening, there's great rejoicing for the film, particularly in the wake of the absolutely pathetic "Battleship" returns.

Sony said, “Lemme see ya Nod Ya Head! Cuz the black suits coming!” And if you look at this weekend’s opening numbers for “Men In Black 3,” they’re really only impressive if you were to go “Back In Time.” As is, $55 million worth of audiences domestically said, “Here come the ‘Men In Black’ ” this weekend, besting the $52 million bow for “Men In Black II” a decade ago. Granted, Sony might have been hoping for more with the inflated price of a 3D movie ticket, but with the pic opening #1 in 104 countries and taking in $202 million worldwide, they can't be too upset, especially considering the troubled production of the movie once pointed toward a potential disaster.

Review: 'Men In Black 3' Is A Surprisingly Decent Return To Form For The Flagging Franchise

Much has been made of the herculean efforts it took to get “Men in Black 3” to the big screen – the constant rewrites, the lengthy hiatus, Will Smith’s giant trailers pissing off much of lower Manhattan – so the mere fact that “Men in Black 3” is watchable at all is something of a pleasant surprise. What’s downright shocking is how enjoyable “Men in Black 3” actually is – it’s an agreeably loopy, visually sumptuous, intermittently clever sci-fi comedy that does much to erase the bad memories of 2002’s wretched “Men in Black II,” easing back into the deadpan weirdness that made the original film so much fun.
