D, for the most part, is being publicly exposed for the costly gimmick we always knew it was. "Gravity" aside, the flagging technology already feels rote, and the movies released in the format, usually following a time-consuming retrofitting process that sees the original image given added dimensions by a platoon of unseen computer wizards, have become even muddier and more mundane. But one genre that still seems to fully recognize both the strengths and shortcomings of the dimensional format (and utilizes both to dizzying degrees) is the 3D concert film.

Metallica Through The Never
It seems slightly redundant for Billboard to refer to Metallica's plans for their forthcoming album “Metallica Through The Never (Music from the Motion Picture)” as “old school”: surely everything that Metallica do is old school? Simply by waking up every morning and continuing to rock, just months before his 50th birthday, Lars Ulrich is old school.

dane dehaan, Metallica: through the never
No matter what you might think of their music now (pretty tepid), there's no denying that Metallica have always thought big and loud. And while at first glance the idea of them doing a 3D concert movie might seem a bit odd, it actually does fit their longtime goal of illustrating bold visions through their music. But does "Metallica: Through The Never" actually look good?

dane dehaan, Metallica: through the never
First announced back in 2012, with more details coming earlier this year, the Nimrod Antal-helmed Metallica concert-movie (with a Dane DeHaan-starring narrative component, strangely) will indeed hit theaters later this year with the added component of IMAX to its already known 3D. And now a trailer for “Metallica Through The Never” has arrived online for you to figure out.

We knew that “X-Men: Days of Future Past” would be hopping between different time periods due to the nature of the story, but we didn’t know what those time periods would be. Well, we still don’t entirely (will the present-day stuff be pre or post “X-Men: The Last Stand”?), but we now know for certain that at least some of the film will be set in the ‘70s thanks to a new tweeted pic of a young Beast and age-unknown Wolverine together. It’s a pretty cool image and the ‘70s costumes look pretty great…although of course Logan’s still sporting that timeless jacket of his. This thing could still be an unwieldy mess, but we can’t help but be impressed by what Singer’s shown us so far.

Man, we totally forgot about this. First announced nearly a year ago, Metallica and "Predators" director Nimrod Antal revealed they were embarking on a concert movie, that also would have some kind of narrative. We all kind of rolled our eyes and said "Cool, whatevs" and then nothing much else was heard. But today the movie lands with a new company, a release date and even an actor in the thing.
