Well, damn that was fast. And we certainly had our doubts. As we outlined in our review of the first season of "Luck," the HBO horse racing world drama starts off pretty slow, can be frustratingly obtuse at times and is stuffed to bursting with characters and subplots, but by the end of the season it firmly finds its footing and sets up the possibility of a cracker jack second season.

Plus 'The Duchess' Helmer Saul Dibb Tackling Undercover Cop Drama 'Codenames Only,' & More From U.K. Production Company IndependentSince 2009's underwhelming "Public Enemies," a fascinating example in style that simply doesn't work as a movie, Michael Mann has been beavering away on "Luck," a HBO collaboration with "Deadwood" writer David Milch, with a cast including Dustin Hoffman, Michael Gambon, Ian Hart, John Ortiz, Dennis Farina and many more. But he's remained undecided as to his next big-screen project, with a number of possible films percolating.

Yeah, yeah, you know the drill by now. HBO is home of yadda yadda projects that typically aren't the yadda yadda of major studios or networks. Basically, their lineup keeps getting stronger and stronger, attracting some of the biggest names in the business and Michael Mann's forthcoming horse racing drama series "Luck" should be another winner.

It has been a couple of years since Michael Mann's period gangster pic "Public Enemies" which, depending on who you ask, was either an underrated gem or (in this writer's opinion) a moody misfire. That's not to say Mann hasn't been busy. He's got the HBO horse racing drama led by Dustin Hoffman coming around the track and he's got more than a couple options for his next feature including the medieval tale "Agincourt" and another gangster pic in "Big Tuna" which "Up In The Air" writer Sheldon Turner was brought on to write last fall. In addition he's got the war photog biopic on Robert Capa in the works, and now, Mann has added another pic to his growing plate.

Despite a number of gestating go-to film projects on Michael Mann's plate including a long gestating adaptation of Ernest Hemingway‘s “For Whom The Bell Tolls;” the medieval tale “Agincourt” based on the novel by Bernard Cromwell and the gangster pic “Big Tuna" being written by "Up In The Air" scribe Sheldon Turner it looks like movement is coming together on a film that has been kicking around for a little while now.

This year's first batch of new high-profile television shows have already proven to be hits, particularly "Boardwalk Empire" and "The Walking Dead," but one of the upcoming projects which has us excited as ever is David Milch and Michael Mann's horse-racing drama "Luck."

With John Hillcoat's 'The Promised Land' Back From The Dead, We Look At Other Films Currently In The Studio GravesLast year, pre-production was halted immediately on “The Wettest Country” -- aka John Hillcoat's "The Promised Land" starring Amy Adams, Shia LaBeouf, Ryan Gosling, Paul Dano, possibly Scarlett Johansson, Michael Shannon, etc. -- potentially killing a film we were all very excited to see. But, stunningly, the film has found a new lease on life with the involvement of Tom Hardy (Hillcoat and LaBeouf are the only other principal talent that's back so far), warming our hearts considering since we were ready to cast it onto the pile of would-be movies dead and buried.

Though Michael Mann is currently working on the upcoming HBO horse racing drama "Luck" with Dustin Hoffman, don't be fooled into thinking he's been seduced completely into the world of cable television. Just a couple of months ago, Mann confirmed he has added two more projects to his plate of potential followups to 2009's disappointing "Public Enemies." In addition to the biopic/romance tale of war photographer Robert Capa with Eva Green attached and a long gestating adaptation of Ernest Hemingway‘s “For Whom The Bell Tolls,” Mann has added the medieval tale “Agincourt” based on the novel by Bernard Cromwell, as well as the gangster pic "Big Tuna." Well, the latter pic has now received a considerable boost.

Things have a been little bit quiet on the Michael Mann front since his lukewarm and somewhat middling "Public Enemies" last year. He's currently hard at work on the David Milch-scribed horse-racing world drama HBO series "Lucky" starring Dustin Hoffman. But in a recent interview with the Financial Times, Mann spilled details on the new HBO series and couple more feature film projects he has up his sleeve.
